Aaqib Javed, a former Pakistani pacer, will take over as the men’s national cricket team’s new fast-bowling coach on Saturday, March 16, according to an official announcement made by Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC). Javed will serve as the team’s temporary manager till the end of the T20 World Cup in June of this year.
SLC CEO Ashley De Silva confirmed that Javed will be joining the team immediately and expressed confidence in the Pakistani legend’s abilities to advance Sri Lankan cricket in all spheres.
“We warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his immense international experience, both in playing and coaching, will help our bowlers come into good shape ahead of the upcoming major international competitions, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” said de Silva in a news release issued by the SLC.
To Sri Lanka’s coaching staff, Javed delivers winning mindset and individual excellence. The 51-year-old finished with more than 200 wickets in his career while playing for Pakistan, who won the World Cup in 1992. Javed has enjoyed more success as a coach. In 2004, he led the Pakistan U19 team to World Cup victory. In 2009, he was the senior men’s team’s bowling coach when they won the T20 World Cup.
Javed was also instrumental in helping the UAE win ODI and T20 status while serving as head coach. He is now the head coach and director of cricket operations for the Lahore Qalandars of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
