Alex Carey stumped Jonny Bairstow on Day 5 of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s for leaving his crease because he thought it was the end of an over. This brought the drama, stress, and heat between England and Australia up several notches. During the lunch break, the members of the Long Room were mean to the Australian players, which made the fans even more tense.
When they questioned Australia’s “spirit of cricket,” England’s captain, Ben Stokes, and head coach, Brendon McCullum, didn’t try to hide how they felt about Bairstow’s dismissal.
While Carey was batting on the last day of the Lord’s Test, the stump mic caught veteran pacer Stuart Broad saying, “That is all you will ever be remembered for.”
Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, a former Indian spinner and well-known commentator, responded to Broad’s statement.
Sivaramakrishnan made fun of Broad by saying that Yuvraj Singh of India hit six sixes off of him in the 2007 T20 World Cup. “Yuvraj Singh will be remembered for hitting Stuart Broad for six sixes in one over.”
Broad has been getting a lot of hate on social media lately. Fans are quick to remind him of how he didn’t walk when he got hit by a ball in the 2013 Ashes. He still stands by that choice, though, because it helped England win a close game that time. Many Australian cricketers and media people have called out his ‘hypocrisy’.
Broad’s comment is funny to Indians because Yuvraj Singh blew up at him during a 2007 T20 World Cup game in Durban after Andrew Flintoff made fun of him. Singh hit Flintoff for six sixes and burst. Yuvraj’s attack was a key moment in the event, as he scored the fastest T20I half-century and put India on the path to winning the first World Cup trophy.
Broad would throw another famous over 15 years later, this time to Jasprit Bumrah, who hit and edged his way to 35 runs off one over at the Edgbaston Test in 2022. This broke the record for most runs given up in one over of a Test match, which had been 28.
When the Ashes foes go to Headingley in Leeds for the third Test match, it will be interesting to see how the English deal with a wicket they didn’t handle well. England needs to win each of the last three Tests to take the Ashes urn back from Australia.
