Paula Badosa and Ajla Tomljanovic joined the long list of 2023 Australian Open withdrawals.
Badosa injured her thigh against Beatriz Haddad Maia in the Adelaide International 2 quarterfinals. The injury prompted her to withdraw from the competition semifinals.
During the United Cup, Tomljanovic injured her knee. The Australian withdrew from the Adelaide International and Major Down Under due to injury.
Badosa announced her withdrawal from the first Grand Slam on Saturday.
Hello, Misfortune… After the quarterfinal match in Adelaide, I was injured and would miss a few weeks. “Sad to miss Australian Open this year,” she posted on Instagram.
The Spaniard hoped to play “as soon as feasible.”
I’ll return ASAP. “See you soon,” she said.
Tomljanovic apologised to her admirers on Saturday for her departure.
“Sorry,” she tweeted.
The World No. 35 said she pulled out because she hasn’t fully recovered from her injuries and her body isn’t fit despite her best efforts.
“It hurts me to write this, but I won’t be competing at the Australian Open this year. I tried everything to get well but ran out of time to rehabilitate and compete at a high level. “I have to listen to my body,” the 29-year-old wrote.
