Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea has initiated discussions with Benfica about signing Enzo Fernandez.

Enzo Fernandez helped Argentina win the World Cup this month in Qatar. Premier League clubs are interested in signing him after his tournament performances.

Benfica paid River Plate €18 million for Fernandez last summer. He has a contract until 2027, so they’re not under any hurry to sell.

Fernandez might be sold if a club triggers his €120 million release clause. One of his suitors may invoke the provision.

Benfica are looking to replace the 21-year-old with Velez Sarsfield’s Maximo Perrone. Chelsea’s interest in the World Cup champion has increased.

Romano says Chelsea are in talks with Benfica over Fernandez’s transfer to Stamford Bridge. Instead of paying the release clause, they’re apparently negotiating a structured arrangement. Twitter journalist: “Chelsea is negotiating with Benfica for Enzo Fernandez. Chelsea would rather pay a large amount than the release clause. Benfica always want €120m. Enzo told Chelsea yes.”

Liverpool and Manchester United both reportedly want Enzo Fernandez. Romano says they haven’t made a formal offer to Benfica.

River Plate will make a lot of money if Chelsea and Benfica sign Fernandez. A sell-on clause in the Argentine team’s agreement with the Portuguese club would net them €31.7 million.
