“She’s heading into 2023 angry ASL and ready to quiet all the WC back talk,” a fan tweeted.
Another admirer noted Williams’ groundstroke let her to compete with players half her age or younger.

Venus Williams’ 2022 season was poor.
Venus Williams begins 2023 after a poor 2022 season in which she won no singles matches. Her solitary win came in her opening match of the year, a mixed doubles match against Alicja Rosolska and Michael Venus.
Before obtaining a wildcard for the US Open, the American lost in the opening round of the Citi Open, Canadian Open, and Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
In the first round of women’s singles in New York, she lost 6-1, 7-6(5) against Alison van Uytvanck. In women’s doubles, she and Serena Williams lost 7-6(5), 6-4 to Linda Noskova and Lucie Hradecka.
Venus Williams is ranked 1000th in the WTA and hopes to rise in 2023. Coco Gauff, Leylah Fernandez, and Sloane Stephens are among the Americans’ Auckland opponents.
The 42-year-old may try to gain a wildcard to the Australian Open after the ASB Classic. Her last Asia-Pacific Major appearance was 2021, when she lost to Sara Errani.
