Gio Reyna blasted Gregg Berhalter for releasing details about his World Cup fallout.
Berhalter’s comments came at a gathering in New York City last week after the USA withdrew from Qatar.
The American coach said they were ready to book Reyna a flight home. USA players voted.
13-12 favored keeping the Borussia Dortmund player.
Two sub appearances didn’t do anything for him.
Reyna, 20, responded to Berhalter’s comments on Instagram, admitting he was unmotivated and emotional.
“I wanted to avoid World Cup comments… Statements have been made about my professionalism and character, so I must respond.”
Dortmund attacker acknowledged to knowing his job in Qatar.
“Coach Berhalter told me my World Cup role would be restricted. Destitute (sic). I play passionately.”
Reyna claimed he apologised to teammates for his passionate nature.
“I’m a highly emotional person, and I let my emotions effect my training and behavior after learning about my limited job. My teammates and coach forgave me after I apologized.”
Reyna’s irritation is clear as he says:
“I’m unhappy by the continued coverage of this matter (and the fabricated versions of events) and astonished that U.S. men’s team staff would contribute to it.”
“Coach Berhalter has always said team concerns will stay ‘in house’ so we can focus on team unity and progress,” he continued.
Manchester City’s Zack Steffen discusses his anger at missing the USA’s World Cup roster.
Steffen didn’t go to Qatar with the USA for the World Cup.
The Middlesbrough loanee missed friendlies and qualifiers owing to personal reasons.
However, he didn’t make the 26-man FIFA World Cup roster.
Boro’s goalie has 18 appearances and four clean sheets.
Steffen said he was heartbroken to miss the World Cup.
“I was sad, angry, and saddened. I felt several things. I believe God has a plan for us all. He’s honest. I’m his believer.”
