Hlubi’s debut sets up South Africa’s series-squaring victory

Bangladesh 94 for 6 (Mondal 42, Shorna 23, Hlubi 2-15, Klaas 2-23) was defeated by South Africa 95 for 2 (Wolvaardt 49*) by eight wickets.

The last women’s T20I match between South Africa and Bangladesh was played at Kimberley. Ayanda Hlubi, making her debut, and Masabata Klaas’s discipline set the stage for South Africa to win and tie the series. Thanks to captain Laura Wolvaardt’s unbeaten 49, South Africa reduced Bangladesh to 94 for 6 before easily winning by eight wickets.

Hlubi chose to bowl first and scored on the fourth delivery of her international cricket match, catching Murshida Khatun off guard during a drive attempt. She got Sobhana Mostary caught at slip on the very next ball after a late outswing off a full ball outside off.

Bangladesh nearly shut down as Shamima Sultana also gave in to the powerplay, leaving them reeling at 17 for 3. At the ten-over point, they were 29 for 3, having scored just 12 runs in the previous 29 balls. Before Nigar Sultana fell, Lata Mondal and him combined 29 runs off 55 balls.

Following Nigar’s dismissal, Shorna Akter gave the Bangladeshi innings a boost as they scored 26 in the first 16 balls. Shorna scored 23 off 16 in the 31-ball 46-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Mondal. Shorna had five for in Bangladesh’s victory in the first Twenty20 International. Before Mondal, who top-scored with 42, was bowled on the last ball of the innings, she was run out in the penultimate over.

While Wolvaardt started the chase steadily, Tazmin Brits attacked spinner Nahida Akter with her feet during the 95-run pursuit. Despite the ball seeming to be going down leg, the two scored 35 runs in five overs when Marufa Akter declared the British batsman leg before wicket.

Anneke Bosch, who scored a half-century in the opening Twenty20 International, was caught by offspinner Shorifa Khatun when she spun one back in sharply, lbw for nine. However, Wolvaardt and Sune Luus made sure South Africa wouldn’t have any more difficulties in their attempt to tie the series. Shorna’s three wayward balls, including a no-ball, were the only thing that aided Wolvaardt; she sent them all to the ropes to speed up the finish.

The first T20I was lost by the hosts, and the second one was wiped out.
