Hurrah for the Hurricanes as Hughes leads the Sixers to their second victory

Hunters 60* helped the Sydney Sixers defeat the Hobart Hurricanes 135 for 8 (Jewell 42, Curran 3-19).

Hobart Hurricanes beset by injuries quickly Riley Meredith appeared to have strained his side as his team lost against the Sydney Sixers, captained by Daniel Hughes, by a margin of six wickets.

In Launceston on Monday night, the Sixers, who are 2-0 in the BBL season, defeated the Hurricanes’ 135 for 8 with four balls remaining.

Before Thursday’s first Test match against Pakistan, Steven Smith departed the squad, and Hughes took his place, scoring an undefeated 60 from 50 balls.

Together, he and Moises Henriques (20 from 24) put up 47 runs to finish off a sizable portion of the chase.

Jordan Silk contributed 23 runs before getting out in the second-to-last over. Sydney needed seven off of six deliveries when Hughes hit a massive leg-side six off Nathan Ellis to guarantee victory. Next, Tom Curran used a boundary through the covers to ice the game.

Halfway through the third over of the chase, Meredith delivered a ball at 152 km/h and pulled up, signaling to his side. It was his first domestic match since he injured his side in a Tasmanian one-day cup match in September. Channel 7 Meredith was told by Hurricanes coach Jeff Vaughan that scans would be available on Tuesday.

Caleb Jewell, the Hurricanes’ opening player, had gotten his team off to a great start before things went south following the powerplay.

In the sixth over, Curran started the damage by having Jewell caught at mid-off. Ben Dwarshuis, a left-arm quick, then dismissed Tim David, a representative of Australia, and England import Sam Hain for single figures in his opening over.

Jack Edwards, a young all-round player, participated in the action when Ben McDermott’s edge was grabbed by wicketkeeper Josh Philippe with a one-handed diving catch at full stretch.

Edwards had bowled just one over in his thirty prior BBL outings before finishing with 2 for 18 from four overs.

In the ninth over, the Hurricanes were down to 69 for 5, but imports Chris Jordan and Corey Anderson stopped the bleeding.

With a career-best 2 for 10, former New Zealand all-rounder Anderson was the Hurricanes’ top bowler.
