With a decisive 6-1 6-2 victory over France’s Diane Parry, Russian teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva has continued her stratospheric rise and advanced to the third round of the French Open.
The WTA reports that the 16-year-old, who turned 16 in April, is currently the youngest player to go to the third round at Roland Garros since 2005.
Andreeva, the youngest participant in this year’s main draw, defeated wild card Parry in just 77 minutes to earn her sixth top 100 victory of the year.
She has played in two main draw matches and three qualifiers so far this year and has yet to lose a set.
When Andreeva defeated world No. 14 Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets in the second round of the Madrid Open, the WTA said that she had already achieved the distinction of being the seventh-youngest woman to defeat a top-20 player this century.
The adolescent, who was ranked No. 312 at the beginning of April, shot up the rankings to No. 143 after winning ITF W60 tournaments and shocking Leylah Fernandez, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Magda Linette in Madrid.
In less than an hour, Andreeva defeated American Alison Riske-Amritraj, 6-2, 6-1, at Roland Garros after entering the tournament unranked less than a year ago.
Andreeva, who finished second in the junior Australian Open this year, is currently competing in just her third tour-level match of her young career and has a phenomenal 22-2 record so far.
The American Coco Gauff, who will take on Julia Grabher on Thursday, might be her next opponent.
