Mullaney becomes Notts’ player-coach

Published:

Steven Mullaney and Nottinghamshire have reached an agreement on a three-year player-coach deal that will see him skipper the 2nd XI and be available for the first team in all formats.

Mullaney, who was captain of the club until recently, has already started to focus on coaching. He was a member of the Trent Rockets staff during the Hundred and worked with the Abu Dhabi T10. His new position at Notts will involve one-on-one coaching and supporting players’ growth as they move up from the seconds into the first team of cricket.

“This change in roles feels logical for the club and myself, and it’s one I’m really keen to throw myself into,” Mullaney stated. Through direct interactions or just by observing how I handle situations, I wish to share part of my gaming experience with others.

By doing this, we may assist in closing the knowledge gap between the first and second teams, giving the players a sense of readiness, self-assurance, and what to anticipate when they step up.

“As a coach, I’ll be expanding on the experiences I’ve had over the past few years, including my exposure at Trent Rockets, in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, and at Nottinghamshire.”

“while I was captain, I was really passionate about getting the best out of people, and it will be the cornerstone of my approach while working with the boys. Building on positive relationships, I can start from a strong platform and feel blessed to be able to assist athletes in a special way both on and off the field.”

Mullaney, 36, still had one year remaining on his playing contract when he signed with Notts in 2010. During his tenure at Trent Bridge, he has won two T20 titles, two one-day cups, a County Championship pennant, and the 2022 Division Two title, which he won as captain.

“This is the start of a new journey for Steve primarily in a coaching and mentoring capacity, albeit he will remain available to play for the first team if and when required,” Peter Moores, the head coach of Notts County, stated. “As we want to provide our second team’s young players with opportunity to advance, his leadership qualities will be beneficial.

“A few years ago, Peter Trego took on a similar job, and we seen how effective it was in helping players develop and get ready for first-team cricket; Toby Pettman, Calvin Harrison, and Matthew Montgomery are just a few examples of that.

As someone who has spent several years at the forefront of first-team activity, he brings significant value to the coaching staff.

“This winter will provide him with the chance to hone his coaching abilities and gain a fresh view on the players. In the end, he will be attempting to determine what part he can play in their future development.”
