The only alteration that makes sense for India’s starting Eleven for the third test is the substitution of Gill for Rahul. With the success that spin-bowling all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel have had in the series so far, it seems doubtful that the team management will want to meddle with the combination at this point.
KL Rahul can no longer avoid the consequences of his actions. One can’t help but have compassion for him. Not very long ago, he was a candidate for the skipper in all forms, but nowadays, he is likely to lose his position in at least two of those formats. Since the World Cup in 2017, Rahul has not played in any Twenty20 Internationals, and there is a possibility that he may not play in the third Test match against Australia, which will begin on Wednesday in Indore. It was clear that his position in the XI was in jeopardy when he was removed from his role as vice-captain for the third and fourth Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This was the case even though he had support from the head coach Rahul Dravid and the captain Rohit Sharma.

The fact that India has been holding practice matches in preparation for the third test has done nothing but bolster the idea. Shubman Gill, who has been in terrific form in white-ball cricket in recent months and also earned his first Test hundred in Bangladesh last year, is poised to replace Rahul in India’s XI. Gill achieved his hundredth in his first Test match in Bangladesh last year. As India strives to win the series and earn a berth in the World Test Championship final, Gill will almost certainly be given the opportunity to bat with Rohit, the team’s captain.

There has been a lot of discussion and commentary over Rahul’s form in red-ball cricket. His overall career average of 33 after 47 Tests does not inspire much optimism, especially considering that he has not scored more than 30 runs in any of his most recent 10 innings. Because of the incredible run that Rahul has been on with the bat, even India’s overpowering victory in the first two Tests, which took place in Nagpur and Delhi, was not enough to take the focus off of him.

On Monday, the 30-year-old batted alongside Gill, but the teenager from Punjab was the one who worked on slip-catching with Virat Kohli. He was the one who practiced with Kohli. Gill and Rahul both had lengthy sessions in the nets on Tuesday, but Rahul chose not to participate in the optional session that was held the day before the test match.

The fast-bowling assault will be led by Mohammad Shami, although it is possible that his seam-bowling partner should be switched. Umesh Yadav’s performance in Test matches played in India has been outstanding. He possesses the expertise as well as the cunning to achieve the same outcomes that Shami has achieved during the course of the series. There was nothing wrong with Mohammed Siraj that caused him to be dropped, but given the fact that he is now considered to be one of India’s best pacers across all formats, it may be reasonable to give him a break and play the more experienced Umesh in the third test instead.

Shreyas Iyer’s position in the middle order should not be in question despite the fact that he did not perform well in either of his innings in Delhi. On the other hand, KS Bharat dispelled any and all concerns regarding his placement in the batting order with a composed knock in the second innings of the Delhi Test.
