Sania Mirza retires after Dubai Duty-Free Championships’ first-round loss.

Sania Mirza, a legendary player from India who had a career spanning 20 years, was eliminated in the first round of the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships on Tuesday, marking the end of her illustrious career.

Losing in the first round of competition at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships on February 21 brought an end to the illustrious 20-year career of Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza, who has competed in the tournament for the last two decades. The women’s doubles match between the Indian superstar, who is 36 years old, and her American partner, Madison Keys, ended in a loss in straight sets. During the hour-long match, the Russian pair of Veronika Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova defeated the American duo by scores of 4-6 and 0-6.

Mirza, who had become professional in 2003 and is now a mother to a son named Izhaan who is 4 years old, finished her illustrious career with six Grand Slam titles. Martina Hingis, a legend in the sport of tennis, was her partner in three of those victories. The remaining three trophies all came in mixed doubles competition; two of them were won with Mahesh Bhupathi, his countryman, at the 2009 Australian Open and the 2012 French Open, respectively, while the third was won with Bruno Soares at the US Open.

When Sania and Rohan Bopanna were competing in the final of the mixed doubles event at the Australian Open earlier this month, they were unsuccessful and ended up losing. This prevented Sania from having a fairytale finale to her Grand Slam career.
