Shakhtar CEO on Chelsea’s Mudryk deal: “I‘m not sure we could even bargain”

Published:

Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Sergei Palkin claims that Roman Abramovich would have prevented Mykhaylo Mudryk’s move to Chelsea.

Todd Boehly’s consortium bought the club eight months ago. The UK government forced Abramovich to sell the club in March 2022.

Due to his Kremlin connections, they seized his UK assets. Palkin now claims that Abramovich may have prevented the two teams from even negotiating for the player.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February, and the fight continues. Palkin also thinks Mudryk’s relocation to Stamford Bridge represents a new UK-US-Ukraine agreement.
“It’s symbolic. I’ll tell you more: if Roman Abramovich still ran the club, we wouldn’t be able to negotiate this contract.”
The 22-year-old winger cost the Ukrainian club £88 million. Arsenal matched Chelsea’s bid, but Shakhtar handed Chelsea the edge due to Arsenal’s alleged taping of the player.

He’s now Chelsea’s No. 15. Mudryk joined the Premier League after a great start in his hometown.

He has 10 goals and eight assists in 18 club games this season.

“Transfer windows are unpredictable. A promising young player. One-on-one, he’s exciting. Our fans probably like him.”

The Blues have plenty of flank alternatives when everyone is fit. The Ukraine international will battle Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Raheem Sterling, Joa Felix, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for wing minutes.

Felix will return to Atletico Madrid after this season’s loan. In recent weeks, the Morocco international has been linked with a Chelsea exit.
