Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has been named the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s new head coach, taking over for Brian Lara who held the position the previous campaign. The future of the remaining members of SRH’s support team, including Muttiah Muralitharan, is uncertain.
After Tom Moody (2013–2019 and 2022), Trevor Bayliss (2020–2021), and Lara (2023), Vettori will be SRH’s fourth head coach.
As Cricbuzz previously reported, SRH was searching for a replacement for Lara, who led the team to a bottom-of-the-table finish in 2023 with only four victories in 14 league games.
In the same competition, Vettori adds coaching experience after leading Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014 to 2018. During this time, RCB qualified for the playoffs in 2015 and placed second in 2016. Vettori also serves as the men’s Hundred competition’s head coach for the Birmingham Phoenix.
The New Zealander, who is currently Australia’s assistant and spin bowling coach, formerly worked as Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach.
The IPL is experiencing a coaching shake-up among teams, as evidenced by RCB’s decision to replace Mike Hesson and head coach Sanjay Bangar from the previous season with Andy Flower. Until the IPL 2023, Flower was the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants. After that, he was fired and Justin Langer took his position.
