On December 23, Kochi will be the location of the Indian Premier League player auction for the 2023 season. It will be a mini auction as compared to the major sale that took place in advance of the 2022 edition, when the 10 franchises were had to almost start over when it came to putting together their teams.
Each team will have an additional INR 5 crore (approximately US $607,000) to spend at this auction, bringing the total amount of money available for bidding up to INR 95 crore (approximately US $11.5 million). This is in addition to the money that was left over from their previous auction purse and the value of the players that they release.
After the auction from the year before, the Punjab Kings had the greatest purse left over, which was INR 3.45 crore (about US $425,000), while the Lucknow Super Giants had used up their whole purse. Following Chennai Super Kings with INR 2.95 crore (approximately US $358,000), Royal Challengers Bangalore with INR 1.55 crore (approximately US $188,000), Rajasthan Royals with INR 0.95 crore (approximately US $115,000), and Kolkata Knight Riders with INR 0.45 crore (approximately US $55,000), the remaining prize money was broken down as follows:
While three clubs, including Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals, had INR 0.10 crore (about US $12,000), the defending champions, Gujarat Titans, were left with INR 0.15 crore (approximately US $18,000).
After the teams have submitted the list of players who are being released by the deadline of November 15, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is anticipated to finalise the player pool for the auction somewhere around the beginning of December.
The mini auction will be finished in just one day, in contrast to the mega auction that took place in February, which was held over two days. However, in the past, mini auctions have resulted in some of the most expensive buys, particularly in the category of abroad players.
This year, franchises are quite interested in learning whether all-rounders Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, and Cameron Green will submit their names for the auction. If they do, there is a good chance that there will be a lot of demand for them.
