Top Stats: SRH smashes an 11-year record to record the greatest IPL total

Published:

Stats from SunRisers Hyderabad’s historic batting victory over the Mumbai Indians:

SunRisers’ 277/3 Hyderabad has the greatest total outside of international cricket and the fourth-highest in T20 cricket. Punjab’s 275/6 against Andhra in Ranchi during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023–24 was the previous highest score in any domestic or franchise league. SunRisers shattered the 11-year IPL record held by RCB, who scored 263/5 against Pune Warriors India in Bengaluru in 2013.

523 strokes Overtaking the previous record of 517 in the T20 International between South Africa and the West Indies in Centurion last year, the total of 523 runs is the most ever in a T20 encounter. For the first time in IPL history, the 500-run mark has been surpassed, breaking the record set by CSK and Rajasthan Royals in their 2010 encounter at Chepauk, which stands at 469 runs.

The record of 37 sixes hit in two previous T20 matches—the APL match between Balkh Legends and Kabul Zwanan in Sharjah in 2018 and the CPL match between Jamaica Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in Basseterre in 2019—was surpassed by the 38 sixes hit in this match. The previous highest number in an IPL game was 33, which was attained three times.

The match’s 69 boundaries—Sun Risers hitting 19 fours and 18 sixes, MI answering with 12 fours and 20 sixes—tied the record for most in an IPL match set in 2010 between CSK and Rajasthan Royals in Chennai. MI’s 20 sixes are tied for second place in IPL history, only surpassed by RCB’s 21 against Pune Warriors India in Bengaluru in 2013.

SunRisers’ greatest Powerplay score in the 2017 edition of the IPL is 81/1, topping KKR’s 79/0 in Hyderabad. After CSK’s 90/0 at the Wankhede in 2015, it also happens to be the second-highest Powerplay score against the Mumbai Indians. The third-highest total in an IPL match is 157 runs (MI made 76/2) during the Powerplay, behind 170 in the 2014 Qualifier between Punjab Kings and CSK at the Wankhede and 159 between CSK and LSG at Chepauk.

Abhishek Sharma’s half-century, which he reached in 16 balls, is the quickest fifty for the SunRisers in IPL history. He broke the record of 18 balls set earlier in the innings by his teammate Travis Head. David Warner and Moises Henriques shared the SRH record prior to today, having each reached the century mark in 20 balls. In addition, it’s the second-fastest IPL fifty by an uncapped Indian batsman, behind Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 13-ball fifty against KKR in Kolkata the previous year.

The SunRisers’ 148/2 total at the halfway point of an IPL innings is the greatest of any team, well surpassing the previous record of 131 set by the Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings against the SunRisers in 2021 and 2014, respectively. MI made 141/2 in their chase, which is presently the second-highest score in an IPL game at the midpoint.

10 This was the first time that all three hitters had scored 50 runs in less than 25 balls, and it was the tenth time that three different players had scored 50 or more in an IPL innings. It was the first time that more than three batsmen hit 50 in less than 25 balls apiece in the same match when Tilak Varma reached his 50 off 24 balls.

Kwena Maphaka’s 66 runs conceded during his first IPL bowling innings are the highest of any bowler, surpassing the 62 runs Michael Neser of Punjab Kings versus RCB in Mohali in 2013 conceded. It is the highest figure for the Mumbai Indians and tied for the third most costly IPL figure overall.

The previous greatest T20 cricket total without a single three-figure score was 267/2, achieved by Trinbago Knight Riders against Jamaica Tallawahs in the CPL. The highest score was Colin Munro’s undefeated 50-ball 96.
