Following the racial abuse of Real Madrid striker Vinicius Jr., Valencia was punished with a partial stadium shutdown for five matches.

Three persons have been detained by Spanish police in connection with the insults directed at the Brazilian on Sunday at Mestalla Stadium.

Valencia was also assessed a 45,000 euro ($39,000) penalties.

The south stand at Valencia will be shut down, and the club has 10 business days to file an appeal.

Vinicius, 22, was dismissed in the 97th minute of the 1-0 loss but will not be banned, according to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

According to a statement from the RFEF, the referee was “deprived of a decisive part of the facts,” which made it “impossible for him to properly assess what happened,” which led to his decision to disqualify Vinicius.

The RFEF continued, “It is considered proven that, as the referee reflected in his minutes, there were racist shouts at Vinicius, altering the normal course of the match and considering the infractions very serious.” This explanation for the partial stadium closure was provided by the RFEF.

In the middle of the second half, an enraged Vinicius alerted the referee to some rival supporters.

Real has reported the harassment of Vinicius as a hate crime to the Spanish prosecutor’s office.
