On the third day of the one-off Test against Bangladesh, Ireland made an amazing comeback. They can thank wicketkeeper-batsman Lorcan Tucker for this, as he hit a century on his debut to help the visitors go into the night with a 131-run lead. Ireland was behind for most of the Test, but they finally turned things around with two good sessions at the end of the day.
Tucker made his first-class debut for Leinster Lightning in the Inter-Provincial Championship in June 2017. In the 14 first-class games he played before facing Bangladesh, he never got to 100 runs. He chose to make his Test debut to show off his batting skills in the highest level of the sport. After it took him 94 balls to get to 50, it only took him 149 balls to get to 100 before he was finally out.
“Tucker seemed to be out of this world to me. I thought it was a really good knock. Even though he didn’t go crazy when he got to 100, Tucker admitted at the end of the day’s play that it was a big deal for him. “I don’t like to be at the top or the bottom. “It’s clear that it’s pretty unique. I didn’t think it was going to happen today. There was a lot of stress on us. We tried to take it one pitch at a time and bat as long as we could. Getting a personal reward was a very nice thing. The same can be said for the team. We are excited about tomorrow.
“You are trying to get to a place where you think you can bat for a long time. We’re not used to the speed yet (of Test cricket). We haven’t played that much cricket for more than one day. So I’m just trying to slow down and not be afraid of dot balls, a maiden, or a string of maidens. Just trying to get into the mindset that things move slowly. I know it’s hot, but to get into that mindset, you have to forget about the weather.
“We tried to take our time this morning, and if Bangladesh gets tired as the day goes on, you might be able to use that to your advantage and try to score more goals. It kind of worked. I think it will help us figure out what to do next “he said.
Tucker also said that he didn’t want to go hard against them because they were so accurate. He hopes that the surface will help them a lot tomorrow as they try to win. “The spinners from Bangladesh are very good. Against them, it seemed like it would be hard to score more than two or three runs per over. When the field was up, I thought there was a chance to score against the seamers “said Tucker.
