Why Steve Smith may yet compete in the next Twenty20 World Cup?

Published:

On Tuesday, January 17, senior Australian batsman Steve Smith scored a magnificent century in the Sydney Sixers-Adelaide Stars match at Coffs Harbour’s International Sports Stadium.

The former Aussie captain scored his first BBL hundred off 56 deliveries with five boundaries and seven sixes. After his record-breaking tonne, the Sixers scored 203/5 in 20 overs and limited the Strikers to 144.

Smith became the fourth IPL and BBL player to achieve a hundred. Smith followed David Warner, Shane Watson, and Chris Gayle.

Smith’s innings strengthens his case for a spot in Australia’s T20 squad for the 2024 World Cup in the West Indies and the US.

In the 2022 T20 World Cup on home soil, Smith scored only four runs in one game.

Smith may play in the next T20 World Cup for three reasons.

#1 Steve Smith is playing well.
Smith is playing well in the shortest format. Before his 100-run knock, the New South Wales hitter scored 36 off 27 deliveries with four boundaries and two sixes.
The two BBL knocks show his great form in the other two formats.

Smith’s ability to bat through the innings makes him a formidable T20 World Cup candidate in the West Indies and USA.

#2 can start innings without Aaron Finch.
Aaron Finch’s poor BBL performance has cast doubt on his T20I selection. Finch’s absence could suit Smith, who has opened innings before.

Smith has batted at No. 3 in 18 T20Is for Australia. Right-handed batter has 559 runs, including three half-centuries, at over 35.

#3 Group leader
Smith is a team leader due to his experience. Smith’s tactical expertise is invaluable to any leader in tough situations.

He has led Australia in all three formats, winning 49 of 95 matches. Smith’s participation in the 2024 T20 World Cup will be essential.
