Illinois guard Ty Rodgers (20) is introduced prior ago a NCAA game at State Farm Center in Champaign on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024.
CHAMPAIGN — Ty Rodgers didn’t play during the 2024-25 season with the Illinois men’s basketball team, opting to use a redshirt season instead after starting 38 games during the 2023-24 season.
He announced his return to the Illini in April, but on Monday, news delivered from Illinois coach Brad Underwood made it seem unclear when Rodgers would return to the court.
Underwood said Rodgers is out indefinitely with a knee injury that will require surgery. He sustained the injury in a pickup game.
Rodgers averaged 6.2 points and 5.3 rebounds with the Illini two seasons ago, a season that culminated with Illinois reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament and finishing with a 29-9 record that included a Big Ten tournament title.
The 6-foot-6, 210-pound Rodgers played in 33 games during the 2022-23 season and averaged 3.3 points to go along with 4.0 rebounds. A Michigan native, Rodgers transferred to Illinois for his final season of high school basketball and played at Thornton, earning First Team All-State honors from The News-Gazette after averaging 17.3 points and 15.4 rebounds with the Wildcats.
