Papua New Guinea Women’s national cricket team, the Lewas, secured a confident
35-run victory over Vanuatu Women in the PacificAus Sports Cricket Invitational match held today at the Amini Park, Port Moresby.
Batting first, PNG Women posted a total of 98 all out in 20 overs, with middle-order batter Henao Jean Thomas leading the charge with 46 runs off 47 balls, including four boundaries.
She held the innings together after early setbacks, as PNG lost three wickets within the first three overs.
The Vanuatu bowling attack kept tight control throughout the innings. Vanuatu’s Rachel Andrew was the standout performer, claiming 3 wickets for 19 runs in her four overs.
She was well-supported by Vanuatu’s Vanessa Vira, who took 2 wickets for 17 runs, and Nasimana Navaika, who maintained pressure with just 8 runs in 4 overs while picking up a crucial wicket.
Both teams put up a competitive match but PNG managed to reach 98, aided by contributions from Holland Doriga (22 off 31) and Dika Lohia (5 off 15). Vanuatu, on the field with three run-outs, removing Isabel Toua, Geua Tom, and Dika Lohia.
Vanuatu Women were bowled out for 63 in 18.2 overs, unable to build score during their chase.
PNG’s bowlers applied pressure early and maintained it throughout the innings to secure the win by 35 runs.
