Ravichandran Ashwin recently shut down a journalist over the glorification of legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli. Notably, the journalist in question, Boria Majumdar, described Kohli as the ‘brand ambassador of Test cricket’ as Team India braces itself for the upcoming five-match series in England.
It is worth noting that both Ashwin and Kohli will not be featuring in the series considering both cricketing icons recently confirmed their retirements from Test cricket. While Kohli will continue to play ODIs, the all-rounder silently made his all-format exit midway into the Australian tour earlier this year.
Ravichandran Ashwin recently gave his take on the legacy of Test cricket during an interview with prominent journalist Boria Majumdar. In a short viral video trending on social media, Ashwin responded to Majumdar’s take when the latter described Virat Kohli as the brand ambassador of Test cricket and talked about the potential impact of the cricketer’s retirement just ahead of India’s five-match series in England.
The legendary Indian all-rounder responded:
“Cricket is way higher than anybody that’s played the game or will play the game. I think we don’t need people to be above the game at all. Nobody that walks the park, is somebody that does good for the game. The game does good by them or bad by them at a certain stage.”
During his playing days, Virat Kohli frequently endorsed Test cricket by expressing his admirations for the format. The legendary Indian batter confirmed his retirement from Tests last month after playing 123 matches for India, aggregating over 9,000 runs in the process at an average of 46.85.
Fellow legend Ravichandran Ashwin also announced his retirement, albeit in December last year during a series in Australia.
