The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Tuesday, but it came at a cost. Center fielder Jonatan Clase later left after getting drilled in the knee by a pitch in the fourth inning, and fellow center fielder Myles Straw (ankle) exited after running into the outfield wall while tracking a fly ball in the fifth.
The Blue Jays still won largely thanks to star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a solo homer. Closer Jeff Hoffman picked up his sixth win of the season after throwing a scoreless ninth inning with Toronto down 4-3, as shortstop Bo Bichette and right fielder Addison Barger finished the job with solo homers in the bottom frame.
Manager John Schneider announced injury updates before Wednesday’s game, via MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson.
“The Blue Jays are giving Myles Straw (ankle) another day, and John Schneider doesn’t think he’ll need the IL, but we’ll see,” he reported. “Sounds like Jonatan Clase is doing OK, too.”
Straw is slashing .264/.294/.339 with one homer and 14 RBI over 59 games, while Clase is slashing .205/.279/.282 with one homer and six RBI over 25 contests.
Veteran outfielder George Springer will start in center on Wednesday and bat fifth, while Barger will play right and bat second. Finally, backup outfielder Davis Schneider will play left and bat eighth.
Southpaw pitcher Eric Lauer (2-1, 2.37 ERA) will start for Toronto against Arizona southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez (2-3, 6.27 ERA). The game will start at 7:07 p.m. EST at Rogers Centre.
