Stop if you’ve heard this one before: New York Mets outfielder Juan Soto is about to make MLB history.
Lost amid Soto’s rocky first Mets season is his continued ascent up MLB leaderboards, especially after the calendar hit June. Soto is dominating opposing pitching this month, hitting .340 with five homers, 10 RBI, and a 9-18 K-BB ratio; that’s a .522 on-base percentage and a 1.222 OPS.
Things are about to get even better. Soto has 999 career hits after going 2-for-3 in Tuesday’s 5-4 loss to the rival Atlanta Braves. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that Soto’s next hit would put him in a small club with Hall of Famers Mel Ott and Mickey Mantle, a club comprised of players who recorded 1,000 hits, 200 homers, and 700 walks before the age of 27.
In fact, Soto is about to enter unprecedented territory. The four-time All-Star has 999 hits, 215 home runs, and 830 walks—and he doesn’t even turn 27 until October.
Soto’s impressive June has him hitting .252 with 14 home runs, 37 RBI, and a .861 OPS over 72 games. He’s provided 2.9 bWAR on a Mets team that still has a two-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East.
Soto has a long way to go before he can equal Mantle’s seven championships. For now, let’s see if he can surpass Ott and win a second ring.
