Vijay Hazare was the first Indian captain to score a century on his captaincy debut in 1951. Hazare made a knock of 164 against England in Delhi. Hazare led India in 14 matches in which the country won one game.
Sunil Gavaskar made a century on his captaincy debut for India in Test cricket in 1976. He made a knock of 116 at Auckland against New Zealand. Gavaskar led India in 47 Test matches with nine wins.
Dilip Vengsarkar is only the second Indian captain to score a century on his captaincy debut against the West Indies in 1987 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Vengsarkar led India in 10 matches and won two games.
Virat Kohli is the only Indian captain to score two centuries on his debut match as captain. He scored a knock of 115 and 141 against Australia in 2014 at Adelaide. Kohli is India's most successful Test captain with 40 wins in 68 matches.
Shubman Gill has become the youngest Indian captain to score a century on Test debut at the age of 25. The newly appointed Indian captain scored a century against England at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds.
