New York Mets third baseman/designated hitter Mark Vientos entrenched himself in the team’s lore by slashing .327.362/.636 with five homers and 14 RBI over 13 playoff games last season. However, the 25-year-old hasn’t been at that level since.
Vientos is slashing .230/.298/.380 with six homers and 21 RBI over 53 games this year and has totaled a -0.2 WAR after notching a 3.2 mark last season. The 6-foot-3-inch, 185-pounder hasn’t played since June 2 due to a hamstring injury, but he did slash .256/.304/.359 in May.
The Mets received an update about Vientos before Friday’s road matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies, via MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo.
“Mark Vientos (hamstring) will continue to play rehab games through this weekend,” he reported. “The Mets will discuss his status after that. If all goes well, Vientos could return Monday for the start of the [Atlanta] Braves series.”
The veteran notched a career-high 111 games played last season, slashing .266/.322/.516 with 27 homers and 71 RBI.
New York is on a six-game losing streak after getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays and Braves. The club is tied with Philadelphia atop the NL East ahead of Friday’s contest, which starts a three-game series.
Rookie right-handed pitcher Blade Tidwell will make his second career start on Friday as veteran hurlers Kodai Senga (hamstring) and Tylor Megill (elbow) rest on the 15-day IL. The 24-year-old gave up six runs on nine hits across 3.2 innings in Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Meanwhile, the Phillies will roll with right-hander Zack Wheeler (7-2, 2.76 ERA).
