Lifeline of Cricket
A free hit on a no-ball is only given in white-ball formats. Gavaskar spoke about it on Day 1 of the opening Test between England and India.
A no-ball comes with a heavy penalty in white-ball cricket, with the batting team getting a free hit. Apart from a run-out, there is no way to dismiss a batter on a free hit. In Test cricket, only one extra run is added to the batting team’s account if the bowler oversteps or bowls a beamer. In the first Test between India and England in Leeds, the Englishmen delivered a few no-balls, leading to a discussion about extending the free hit to red-ball cricket. When Sunil Gavaskar was asked about his opinion, he said no to the idea.
“No free hit on a no-ball in Test cricket. There is no need to give easy runs in the Test format. You can introduce a penalty for balling a no-ball in the longest format, but the free-hit concept should be limited to white-ball formats,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
The International Cricket Council hasn’t discussed changing the no-ball rule in the five-day format. Meanwhile, India reached 359/3 at stumps on Day 1 of the first Test in Leeds. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill scored hundreds, while Rishabh Pant managed a half-century.
Karun Nair, who has returned to the Test side after 8 years, is a part of the playing XI. Prasidh Krishna is also playing after a long time.
