The WNBA season has continued to separate the true title contenders from those who are still several pieces away from competing for a championship.
While many fans and media personnel have a handful of contenders marked before the season, such as the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx, one team has surprised the experts.
The Atlanta Dream have made some early noise, standing at No. 2 in the Eastern Conference and No. 4 in the WNBA rankings.
On Friday, Atlanta was preparing for a matchup against the Washington Mystics.
Before the game tipped off, the WNBA posted a video of Dream star Brittney Griner, highlighting her recent historic achievement.
Griner passed WNBA legend Lisa Leslie for the second-most blocks in WNBA history, currently sitting behind Margo Dydek on the all-time list.
“Brittney Griner made history last game,” posted the official social media account of the WNBA. “Now she’s back for more BG is now 2nd all-time in career BLKS, surpassing Lisa Leslie and adding to her legacy as one of the game’s top defenders! Catch her and the Dream in action tonight against the Mystics at 7:30pm/ET on ION.”
Griner has posted 827 blocks while Dydek finished her career with 877 blocks.
Brittney Griner is currently playing in her first season with the Atlanta Dream, posting averages of 10.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game.
She stars alongside several other top-level players in the Dream lineup, such as Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray.
At the time of this writing, Griner was listed as questionable for the Atlanta Dream’s matchup against the Washington Mystics due to an illness.
