The Philadelphia Phillies, after their key win against the New York Mets on Friday night, are in sole possession of first place in the NL East. Their competition in the NL East has been struggling lately, with the Mets on a seven-game losing streak and the Atlanta Braves in a huge hole. But, for the Braves, things just got a lot worse.
In an announcement from the Braves on Twitter/X, they have placed starting pitcher, ace, and 2024 Cy Young award winner, Chris Sale, on the injured list. He’s going on the 15-day injured list with a ribcage fracture.
It’s a brutal update for the Braves, and is horrible news overall. The Phillies saw Aaron Nola suffer a setback with fractured ribs, and now the Braves have one of their pitchers go down with a similar issue. But the Braves losing Sale is an especially brutal blow.
In 2025, Sale has been incredible. His 2.52 ERA and 5-4 record have been one of the main reasons why the Braves, despite all of their struggles in 2025, have been good as of late. He started the year slowly, but has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since the start of May.
The Braves began to make up ground in the NL East, but this injury to Sale likely puts a pause to their resurgence. Sitting 11 games behind the Phillies, the Braves need all the help they can get to get back into the postseason.
But this injury to Sale, while not season-ending, could effectively end the Braves’ season. He’s going to miss extended time and will force the Braves to trot out lesser pitching.
From the Phillies’ perspective, they had initially been scheduled to face Sale in their upcoming series. Now, the Phillies avoid the ace pitcher and instead will face a backup for the Braves.
While the Phillies were in decent shape in the NL East, the Braves are a solid enough team that could make a run down the stretch. Instead, after the Sale injury news, it seems likely the Phillies will only be directly competing with the Mets for the NL East.
While the Braves aren’t out of things just yet, this is a huge blow to their chances of making a postseason appearance in 2025. Sale is their best pitcher, and losing him for a while will be a huge blow.
