NEW ULM — New Ulm Silver VFW fell to a late to Hastings 14-10 in its final game of the Junior Upper Midwest Classic Saturday at Johnson Park.
New Ulm held a 9-2 lead after the third inning, but Hastings scored in every inning from then on to put Silver away.
Miles Castleman took the loss for New Ulm, allowing two runs on three hits. Ryler Collins made the start, striking out three and allowing six runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. At the plate, Castleman was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Parker Ranweiler was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Noah Gode was 2 for 4 with a run scored, and Colin McAlpine was 1 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Trevan Thordson was 2 for 2 with an RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, New Ulm got things going in the second. Paxton Johnson was hit by a pitch, then stole second, setting up Evan Starke for a single, after which Johnson scored on a fielding error on the play. Starke scored later in the inning on a single from Ranweiler, then Collins hit a sacrifice fly that scored McAlpine. Castleman then doubled to score Ranweiler and Kaden Stueber to make it a 5-0 game.
Hastings got two runs back in the top of the third, but New Ulm kept pushing with a four-run bottom of the inning. Johnson scored on a double steal, taking home plate, Gode scored ona a single by McAlpine, then Ranweiler singled to score McAlpine. Collins put a ball into play to score Ranweiler on an error for the 9-2 lead.
Silver’s offense stuttered after that, failing to score runs in the fourth and fifth as Hastings cut the lead to 9-7. Hastings scored four more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 11-9 lead, but New Ulm managed to get a run across in the bottom of the innings Thordson singled to bring home Castleman. However, three more runs from Hastings in the top of the seventh sealed the 14-10 win.
New Ulm plays Sleepy Eye VFW on Thursday at Searles Park.
