Jasprit Bumrah and Harry Brook exchanged blows on an exhilarating Day 3 of the series-opening first Test between India and England. Canada secured a historic qualification for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In other news, Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has recovered from his illness and will be available for selection in the playing XI.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Sunday, June 22.
England amassed 465 from 100.4 overs after resuming Day 3 at 209-3. Harry Brook bludgeoned 99 quick runs from just 112 balls with 11 fours and two sixes before falling to Prasidh Krishna. The Indian paceman also dismissed Ollie Pope and Jamie Smith after going wicketless on Day 2. Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up the tail to complete a scintillating five-fer, keeping down England by six runs in the process.
In response, Team India extended its lead to 96 runs by reaching 90-2 from 23.5 overs before stumps. KL Rahul remains unbeaten at 47* off 75 balls, and will resume the second Indian innings alongside captain Shubman Gill (6*).
Washington Freedom overcame MI New York in a last-over thriller in Dallas in match 11 of the MLC 2025 season. The MI New York batted first and mounted 188-4 from 20 overs courtesy of a splendid 34-ball 55 from Quinton de Kock.
In response, Freedom opener Mitchell Owen blasted 60 runs off just 26 deliveries to go along with his timely breakthrough with the ball. Mark Chapman and Jack Edwards also chipped in during the chase to counter the likes of Trent Boult (2-38) and Naveen-ul-Haq, storming Freedom past MI New York by two wickets and four balls to spare.
Canada team has sealed a spot for the 2026 Men’s ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year. Under the leadership of Nicholas Kirton, they walloped Bahamas by seven wickets in just 5.3 overs in match number nine of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Regional Qualifiers in King City.
With five wins in five matches in the tournament, the Canadian cricket team is set to top the points table, regardless of the results in the remaining two games. Canada’s qualification marked only their second in a T20 World Cup after making debut in the 2024 edition, and also made them the 13th team to secure a berth in next year’s T20I spectacle.
Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has recovered from his fever and is set to make his return to the national playing XI for the upcoming second Test against Sri Lanka. The series-deciding second Test will be hosted by the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo between June 25 and June 29. Mehidy’s recovery was confirmed by Abdur Razzak, one of the national selectors from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
The 27-year-old, recently appointed as Bangladesh ODI captain, was forced out of the playing XI in the first Test owing to fever.
Pakistan top-order batter Abdullah Shafique is facing visa issues before making his debut for the Yorkshire cricket club in the ongoing County Championship Division One 2025 season. The 25-year-old was roped in by the club earlier this month by signing a short-term deal.
His delayed debut now means that Shafique will not be available for Yorkshire’s weekend fixture.
