Benfica lead thanks to an Andreas Schjelderup goal against Bayern Munich in the final Group C game at the 2025 Club World Cup.
The German champions have already booked their last-16 spot and Benfica are well placed to follow them, but far from guaranteed. They need a point today to make absolutely sure of a knockout place, so that opening goal was an important one.
At the same time, third-placed Boca Juniors need a big victory against Auckland City to stand any chance of progression — that game is level at 1-1 with the players off the field because of stormy weather.

87' Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich
Benfica's Angel Di Maria and Vangelis Pavlidis have emptied the tank and walk off for Joao Rego and Tiago Gouveia.
Bayern's last subs on the way too…

Harry Kane inside the box… Nicolas Otamendi is calm and patient (unlike him!) as he slowly and gradually forces the England captain wide and then back.
Kane has played in six matches against Otamendi in his career… and not scored. Yet.
Then Sane gets a shot inside the box but lashes it over.

Antonio Silva has been really impressive for Benfica.
Konrad Laimer swings in a cross from the right, Harry Kane is poised to nod it home, only for Antonio Silva to get his head in the way and divert it out for a corner.
Brilliant timing.
82' Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich
Haha, Orkun Kokcu picks up the ball, sees Manuel Neuer off his line, and slams forward an extremely ambitious shot from miles and miles out.
It dribbles through to Neuer.
81' Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich
Harry Kane is frustrated after being scythed down, and the referee sprints in to squash any potential handbags.
Then Benfica subs on the sidelines are up in arms as Tah outmuscles Pavlidis, before Olise is clattered from behind.
Both teams getting a bit tetchy.
Apart from the dangers of the weather — both storms and sweltering temperatures alike — for fans and players, the weather breaks pose a different challenge for FIFA ahead of next year's World Cup.
The whole point of the final games of a group kicking off at the same time is so the teams do not know what is happening in the other fixture.
It adds jeopardy should multiple teams be chasing a place in the knockouts, but also stops teams from sitting back to get mutually beneficial results.
A lengthy weather delay in games disrupts that.

To be fair to Renato Sanches, he has succumbed to the heat and goes off.
Defender Adrian Bajrami onto the pitch in his place.
I think that makes it a back five with wing-backs.
77' Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich
A brief pause in play as Renato Sanches receives some medical treatment on the pitch.
Bayern aren't happy, feeling he is time-wasting.
75' Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich
Once again Michael Olise creates the chance!
He cuts inside, crosses it in, causes chaos, the ball falls to Pavlovic inside the box, he chops it onto his left foot with a nice touch, but slips as he shoots and it's well parried by the tall Trubin in goal, who spreads himself a la Peter Schmeichel.
Such a sizeable wingspan.

Can Bayern find an equaliser which would take them top of Group C?

Harry Kane doubled over in front of the ice bucket, submerging his hands and spooning cold water onto his body.
Very hot out there still.

A little break in play.
A reminder: later today, The Athletic has live coverage of Chelsea vs ES Tunis in Group D.
Michael Olise is so good at football.
That is all.

It's all happening in this second half!
Olise into Thomas Muller outside the box, lovely twisting pivot and first-time pass played through for Konrad Laimer, who slams his shot from a tight angle off the inside of the left post and away.
Offside flag goes up, he was a yard or so beyond the final defender. Wouldn't have counted.
65' Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich
Olise, so good on the ball, cuts inside from the right and teases a lovely curling ball into the area… Harry Kane and Thomas Muller both end up on the floor and appeal for the penalty.
Not much contact on either of them. Otamendi makes that point rather forcefully to them, leading to a grumpy tete-a-tete with Kane.
The French referee waved it away early. Good call.
63' Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich
With Boey unable to continue, he comes off for Austrian Konrad Laimer.
Like Aursnes, he is a natural midfielder covering at right-back.

Is this the equaliser? The offside flag is up!
Joshua Kimmich plays it out to Michael Olise, who cuts back inside and feeds it back to Kimmich.
The German takes it onto his left and lashes it hard and low into the bottom-right corner past Trubin's dive… but the offside flag belatedly goes up.
Replays show Harry Kane was a few yards offside and was tacking across the six-yard box, in goalkeeper Trubin's eyeline.
He is interfering with play there. Right decision. But Kane didn't need to be there!
What a moment for Auckland City and it certainly wasn't their first chance in that game as they have caused Boca Juniors some real problems on the counter.
It means that we are as we were in that game over in a very stormy Nashville.
There won't be any pressure on Benfica from there, so it is all about them maintaining their lead against Bayern Munich to secure top spot.
But, as Max mentioned, the German champions have been much improved since half-time.
60' Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich
Bayern full-back Sacha Boey receives the ball and with no one around him, sits down on the floor.
Cramp in his right leg, I think. His team-mate stretches it out.
All players take the chance to grab a drink.
