Northwest Sports Update: Flag football in Lynden, Cal Raleigh makes more history, Caitlin Clark fever in Seattle and more – My Bellingham Now

The Mariners are back tonight as Cal Raleigh looks to continue his torrid home run streak.

Cal homered in yesterday’s 11-2 dismantling of the Minnesota Twins in their series opener. It was the fourth consecutive game he’s gone yard in and made it three straight months where he’s hit at least 10 home runs.
He’s the first player to do that in Mariners history and the first catcher to do so in MLB history. Cal now leads the majors with 32 home runs and 68 RBI.
Julio Rodriguez, Luke Raley and Dominic Canzone also homered in yesterday’s blowout win over the Twins. Bryan Woo picked up his seventh win of the season after throwing six innings of two-run ball.
The Mariners will look to keep up the hot hitting today in the second of their four-game series in Minneapolis.  Coverage begins at 3:30 and first pitch is at 4:40 with Luis Castillo on the mound.
The Bells are starting a key divisional series at home tonight. They’re hosting the Wenatchee AppleSox in a meeting between the top two teams in the North Division.

The Bells are coming off their first series loss of the season at the hands of the Marion Berries. They still hold a 1.5 game lead over Wenatchee, who have lost three straight themselves.
It will be a reunion for first-year Bells head coach Ed Knaggs, who spent 13 years coaching the AppleSox and led them to five West Coast League championships.
First pitch is at 6:35 from Joe Martin Field and tonight is half off tickets at the ballpark.
Caitlin Clark fever is coming to Seattle tonight. The Storm are hosting the Indiana Fever in the WNBA star’s first visit of the season to Climate Pledge.
Seattle’s won three straight games and six of their last seven as one of the hottest teams in the league. They’re coming off a 10-point win over the defending champion New York Liberty on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Clark is leading the league in assists and has made nearly three 3-pointers per game while helping lead Indiana to a 6-7 record.
Tonight’s game tips off at 7:00 from Climate Pledge and is also being shown on NBA TV.
A new winter sport is coming to Lynden High School. The school announced that it will offer girls flag football for the first this upcoming school year.
The WIAA made it an official sport earlier this year and with Lynden’s announcement, the school becomes the fifth in Whatcom County to include it. Girls flag football is currently offered at Bellingham, Sehome, Squalicum and Ferndale. But Lynden AD Mike McKee expects about half of the 16 teams in the Northwest Conference to adopt it over the next few years.
Girls attending Lynden Christian will also be able to join the Lions’ flag football team, since LC currently does not offer the sport.

Lynden will begin the search for a coach soon and the school has already applied for a grant from the Seattle Seahawks to help jumpstart the program.
