Graham: Hi Phil. Before Everton’s last pre-season game against Roma they are playing a legends game between older players of both clubs. Which legend would you like to see in each squad this season? Tony Adams at Arsenal, Gazza at Tottenham, Osgood at Chelsea, Sir Alex at Man United, Lineker at Everton?
I think I’d like to see Peter Reid in an Everton legends’ team. Not sure how long it would be before the yellow card would be out for Peter in the current climate, though. Fantastic, brave midfielder and a great personality. One of the best.

Peter, Woodhall Spa: Hi Phil, it’s obvious that Lee Carsley is a perfect fit for the England U21 role. If you were offering career advice what would you say should be his next career step?
He certainly does not need my advice, but my opinion is that Lee Carsley is, as you say, a perfect fit for the under-21s and he is under contract to the FA until 2027.
The FA hold him in very high regard, quite rightly given he has just won his second successive Euros, and he seems perfectly happy in this position.
I am sure he will attract interest from clubs, but I would imagine he would think very, very, carefully before accepting any offer away from the FA because he is such an integral, and successful, part of what they are trying to achieve.

James: Hi Phil, after a strong Euros performance, what are the chances of Ipswich keeping hold of Omari Hutchinson? On the one hand he is young and developing still, on the other his relatively low £35m release fee is small change for most established premier league teams to gamble with. What’s your take?
Afternoon, James. I would say Ipswich Town’s grip on Omari Hutchinson has probably been loosened by his eye-catching performance in England’s under-21 Euros win.
It will have attracted a lot of attention and may well have whetted his appetite for more Premier League football and it is noticeable that clubs such as Everton and West Ham United have already been linked as speculation starts.

Re Chelsea's riches in attack, 1445, at least 8 of the 13 named will be sold or loaned out by the end of the transfer window. The only certainties to be at Stamford Bridge next season, from that list, are Palmer, Neto, Delap and Estevao. Jackson and Madueke are as likely to leave as to stay. So add Pedro and Gittens and, in reality, Maresca will have 6 forwards to choose from – 2 for each position, which is pretty standard for a top PL club.
    Nick, London
At least 6 of those on the current Chelsea forwards list would be sold or loaned. I don't see Nkunku, Felix, Guiu, Sterling, Broja, Datro Fofanah being in the squad next season and Jackson could possibly join them. The club is also going to lose Mudryk for an extended period so a replacement is needed.

Brentford director of football Phil Giles says the club will only sell Bryan Mbeumo if the “deal is right” and hasn’t ruled out the forward staying.
Cameroon international Mbeumo is the subject of serious interest from Manchester United, who have had two offers rejected for the forward – the second of which was worth up to £62.5million.
Mbeumo wants to join United and is understood to have expressed that point of view to the London club.
And speaking to BBC Sport, Giles said: “There’s not so much (progress with Mbeumo).
“He had a fantastic season, we expected big interest in him, we have had big interest in him.
“He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career, of course he does – he is well within his rights to do that.
“We are in constant dialogue with him and representatives about that. As it stands at the minute we don’t have an agreement in place for him to leave.
“It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay.
“It has to be the right deal for Brentford, any club will tell you that. If it’s not right deal why would we do it.
“He is certainly one of our best players, if not our best player, and we need our best players. There’s no harm in keeping your best players.”

Brentford director of football Phil Giles has confirmed that captain Christian Norgaard is close to joining Arsenal.
BBC Sport revealed last week that the two Premier League clubs had agreed a fee, believed to be up to £15m inclusive of add-ons, for the Denmark midfielder.
And Giles admits he expects Norgaard to complete his move to the Emirates Stadium.
"We have been in conversations with Arsenal for the last week to 10 days – as it stands it hasn’t been completed yet but it is heading in that direction," Giles told BBC Sport.
“If that happens for him then fantastic, he’s earned it. He’s been a brilliant captain for us. Let’s see how that story ends but we are pretty open about that interest there."

Is Chelsea’s proposal for a new stadium to accommodate supporters, or just in case their entire squad turns up?

Rich: Question for Phil – Are you surprised by the lack of closed business (incoming/outgoings) at Man Utd? The club leadership were very keen to put out we have to sell to buy but have done little of either. I find myself envious of Chelsea who can close a deal for Joao Pedro in hours while we have spent 5 weeks on Mbeumo only to pay what Brentford asked for day one.
Hello, Rich. United have to trade smartly this summer because of their financial position. They have already signed Matheus Cunha for £62.5m, while negotiations continue for Mbuemo.
They may be prepared to play a longer game because Mbeumo’s preference is clearly Old Trafford but Brentford, quite rightly, will not hand out bargains.United cannot spend as lavishly as Chelsea seem able to do.
On the general point, we are only into July tomorrow and these are relatively early days in the summer. Plenty of time for more moves.

I simply don’t know what Man Utd’s transfer strategy is. They clearly need to do what Liverpool did a few years ago and sort out their spine. Mamardashvili, Murillo and Wharton would have been a fantastic start. Instead they’ve spent £120 million on mercurial attacking players?

Rob from Somerset: Hi Phil. You mentioned London being a thing – how much of a pull is London for in demand footballers? Surely it's just the money that talks at the end of the day?
I do think there is an attraction to the capital, Rob, but success also matters, so Liverpool and Manchester (City and United) also have a big pull.
And yes, money talks. Very loudly. Newcastle have had success finally by winning the Carabao Cup but are struggling to get the big deals over the line, as we have just seen with Chelsea coming in to sign Joao Pedro from Brighton, a player Eddie Howe really wanted.
There is certainly a London attraction, but success (or the chance of achieving it) also matters.
    Ask Me Anything
    Ask Me Anything
BBC Sport's Ask Me Anything team have been asking for your questions…
Are clubs at the Club World Cup allowed to register new signings and could Joao Pedro play for Chelsea at the tournament?
Yes, clubs at the Club World Cup can still register new players at the tournament.
On 27 June, a secondary registration window opened that allowed clubs to add up to two new players to their squad. That window closes on Thursday, 3 July.
Clubs are allowed to remove players from their lists if their contracts expired on 30 June.
However, players may not play for two different clubs at the competition.
Should Chelsea's proposed move for Joao Pedro be completed, they will be allowed to register him but must do so before Thursday's deadline. It would mean he could feature in their quarter-final against Palmeiras.
Clubs are permitted to replace goalkeepers due to injury or illness at any point during the tournament.
Another point to mention, Chelsea had the youngest squad in Premier League history last season and that trend could continue in 2025-26.
The Blues have agreed deals to sign 23-year-old Joao Pedro from Brighton and Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens, 22.
Highly-rated winger Estevao, 18, will formally join from Palmeiras after the Club World Cup, while moves for striker Liam Delap, 22, midfielder Dario Essugo, 20, and defender Mamadou Sarr, 19, have already been completed.
In 2024-25, Chelsea broke the Premier League record by fielding starting line-ups with an average age of 24 years and 36 days.

I was going to put a post complaining about Chelsea's absurd spending but then I thought, what's the point? No one would care. Fans literally do not matter in football anymore.
    Tom
Maybe we should just close the transfer window now, as it seems Chelsea have bought everybody?
    Jon
Check out this post from earlier on the attacking players Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has at his disposal.
This list does not include potential news signings Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens:

*will join Chelsea upon the conclusion of Palmeiras' campaign at the Club World Cup.

Danny: Seven-year lucrative contracts aside, why on earth would any young player choose to go and play for Chelsea over other clubs right now? It's got to the point where I'm forgetting who even plays for them. I genuinely forgot they signed Joao Felix last summer for £45m! Other than Palmer, have any of their signings in the last three years been a genuine success? And why isn't there more negativity shown towards their failed signings like other clubs get?
Jay: If you were a Chelsea academy player's parent, would you be looking to move your kid in? Surely, there is no chance for any of them to break into the ChelseaVerse in the next seven years is there?
Hi Danny and Jay. It’s certainly an interesting point and will surely come into the considerations of younger players who are signed with an eye to the future.
Liam Delap will be an interesting test case here. He had other attractive options but chose Chelsea, who are still in the market to sign forwards such as Joao Pedro.
Delap clearly believes he will get regular football this season and he will need it if he wants to press his case for a place in England head coach Thomas Tuchel’s thoughts for the World Cup.
Chelsea will always have a pull for any young players, but it is clear you will need to be very special to break through.

Scott: Phil, do you think the money involved in transfers even matters anymore? The numbers are so high and basically irrelevant because a lot of clubs have infinite resources. The story of the players transfer is the main thing, the monetary amount isn't worth paying attention to any more.
Hi, Scott. I sort of see your point but the money involved always matters, especially with PSR. The players are the story, but so is the money being spent. It is always a source of debate, as we saw in the discussion around Liverpool spending £100m, possibly rising to £116m, to buy Florian Wirtz.

Neil1966: Hi Phil, tomorrow is 1 July. If, due to financial fair play, we see an avalanche of transfers being completed, I'm hoping my club Arsenal will start with an abundance of them.
I have no doubt Arsenal will be heavily involved.
The Martin Zubimendi deal just needs to be formally completed, while the move for Brentford’s Christian Norgaard just smacks of a sound, common-sense deal. It might not be one that gets supporters too excited, but this is an experienced, proven Premier League player.
Kepa Arrizabalaga falls into the same category as cover and competition for keeper David Raya – but we all know the one you really want is news that a reliable, proven striker has been signed.
I am 100% certain this will happen – mainly because it has to.
Arsenal’s failure to do this last summer was an horrendous oversight and must be corrected, whether this is by signing Viktor Gyokores or Benjamin Sesko. It simply must be done and I am sure it will be.
According to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, external, it is possible for a sale after 30 June 2025 to be included in a club's 24/25 accounts if the sale has been agreed in principle but the price has not been finalised.
