Tigers’ Gleyber Torres Sends Heartfelt Message After Big Career News originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Second baseman Gleyber Torres is in his first season with the Detroit Tigers after signing a one-year, $15 million contract for 2025, following seven seasons with the New York Yankees.
Torres made an immediate impact—earning All-Star selections in each of his first two MLB seasons after his 2018 promotion to the big leagues.
Since then, he has remained a steady presence in the lineup but never recaptured that All-Star form. Playoff baseball proved to be especially challenging: in 24 playoff games over the past three postseasons, Torres hit just .208 with two home runs, 10 RBIs and 14 runs scored.
His down year in 2024—capped by a league-leading 18 errors among second basemen—led the Yankees to decline offering him a contract, effectively ending his tenure in the Bronx.
In Detroit, however, Torres has emerged as a key contributor—fueling the Tigers’ 54–33 record, the best mark in the American League, and providing veteran leadership atop the lineup.
When it was announced Wednesday that he would start the 2025 All-Star Game for the American League—his third selection—Torres posted on X, “I want to express my gratitude for all the support you have given me during the season. I’m so proud to have been voted the starting second baseman for the American League All-Star team by you, the fans.”
Through 74 games this year, he’s delivered seven home runs, 43 RBIs, a .279 batting average and an .811 OPS while committing just two errors, improving both offensively and defensively.
With Detroit chasing back-to-back postseason berths for the first time in over a decade, the Tigers will lean on Torres to sustain this mid-career resurgence as they push toward October.
