CRICKET: Leigh on Sea moved top of the Division Three table after beating West Essex by 73 runs.
Leigh were put into bat after losing the toss and scored 259/6 in 50 overs.
Matthew Wagstaff top scored with 58 not out while opener Ross Keeley added 52, skipper James Spencer 40, Sevriano Cupido 39 and Albert Adams 38 not out to put the visitors in a strong position.
In reply, West Essex were then dismissed for 186.
Tim Knox (3/32), Cupido (3/77) and Oliver West (2/35) then took centre stage to guide Leigh to another important victory in their pursuit of promotion and the league title.
In Division Two, eighth placed Westcliff on Sea beat bottom of the table Stanford le Hope by 56 runs.
Westcliff were put into bat and scored 254/9 declared.
Peter Barnes led the way with 58 while Adithya Ajikumar added 56 not out and Darshan Shetty 33.
In reply, Stanford le Hope were dismissed for 198.
Matthew Higgins top scored with 55 but it was not enough to stop Westcliff coming out on top.
Sam Adley took 3/57 while Muhammad Farooqi, Callum Mortimer and Adithya Akikumar all took two wickets each to bag an important win.
In Division Four, Benfleet slipped to third in the standings after suffering a 74 run defeat against Walthamstow who now sit second.
Walthamstow scored 191 after being put into bat with Luke Whitbourn the best of Benfleet’s bowlers as he took six wickets for 45 runs.
Ben Prophet chipped in with 2/38 before Benfleet were bowled out for 117.
Sam Coelho top scored with 19.
Elsewhere, Wickford moved fifth in the table after an exciting one wicket win against Redbridge.
Batting first after winning the toss, Redbridge scored 223.
P Hasan (3/43) and A Metcalfe (3/35) both bowled well for Wickford who then made it home for the loss of nine wickets.
Opener R Kainth top scored with 71 while Q Khan added 37 and Z Mohammed 30 as Wickford edged home by the narrowest of margins.
Wickford are now 41 points behind the top two teams and 70 points above the bottom two at the midway point of the season.
