The Ole Miss football community is mourning the loss of freshman defensive lineman Corey Adams, who was killed Saturday night in a shooting in Cordova, Tennessee, just outside Memphis.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Adams, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other men were also shot and transported to area hospitals, though none are reported to be in critical condition. No arrests have been made as the investigation remains ongoing.
“While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Ole Miss said in a statement. “Out of respect for his family, we will not be commenting further at this time. We ask the Ole Miss community to keep Corey in their thoughts and respect the privacy of everyone involved.”
Adams, a native of New Orleans, enrolled at Ole Miss in January and was viewed as a rising talent along the defensive line. He starred at Edna Karr High School, where he earned all-state honors twice and helped lead the program to multiple successful seasons.
Deputies responding to the scene on Saturday night located a vehicle near the intersection where the incident occurred. Adams was found inside the vehicle, and first responders attempted life-saving measures before Shelby County Fire personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Adams had only just begun his college football journey as teammates, coaches, and fans across the SEC have shared their condolences on social media, expressing shock and sadness over the loss of a young life filled with promise.
In the meantime, Ole Miss is offering support to Adams’ family and teammates, who are now navigating an offseason clouded by tragedy.
