Missed it. Didn’t we? A few runs earlier, Joe Root crossed the 1000-run mark in Tests at Old Trafford. He is the first batter to do so!
53.6: Mohammed Siraj to Joe Root, MIX UP, RUN OUT CHANCE, MISSED, 50-RUN STAND UP! Phew. What drama. On a length, outside off, Joe Root came forward to push it to the off side but the ball lifted suddenly. He somehow managed to push it away with soft hands and the ball rolled away towards gully. Now, there was perhaps some room for the fielder to cover before getting to the ball and Ollie Pope at the other end thought, right, let’s take the run. But Root is still in his thoughts, thinking as to why is he getting all such deliveries, not even knowing where the ball is. Pope is halfway down and now Root sees him and starts to run. But then, Pope sees Root stranded in his thoughts and stops. Now, both stop, not knowing what to do. Eventually, Root takes the risk of the fielder missing his shy at the bowler’s end and it pays off as the throw is way off the mark. Pope says sorry, but that was a needless run.
53.5: Mohammed Siraj to Joe Root, Back of a length, outside off, JR arches back and looks to play the upper cut but misses.
53.4: Mohammed Siraj to Joe Root, Landed on a length, outside off, Joe drives it towards cover.

53.2: Mohammed Siraj to Joe Root, Fuller, outside off, this time Root walks into the shot and defends.
53.1: Mohammed Siraj to Joe Root, On a length, outside off, Joe Root pushes inside the line and misses.
Since 2023, Bumrah has the best bowing average in Test cricket (15.9). He also has the best bowling strike rate in the same period (32.3, minimum 15 inns). The numbers are before this match.
52.6: Jasprit Bumrah to Ollie Pope, IN THE AIR… SAFE! Another streaky moment for Pope. On a good length, around off, Ollie gets across to nudge it to the leg side. But the ball holds on the surface and lifts up suddenly. Pope has nowhere to go and is helpless as the ball takes the leading edge and lobs over to the off side. A couple of fielders charge in for the catch but the ball lands down safely in the region slightly behind silly point!
52.5: Jasprit Bumrah to Joe Root, A short ball now, around off, Joe swivels and pulls it behind square leg for a single.
52.4: Jasprit Bumrah to Joe Root, Landed outside off, Root lets it pass.
52.3: Jasprit Bumrah to Joe Root, Back of a length, around off, Joe Root rises with the bounce and keeps it down.
