Friday provided the first opportunity for the Colts kickers to participate in practice.
For both Spencer Shrader and Maddux Trujillo, their performances were solid to start off camp. Shrader was 4-for-6 while Trujillo was 3-for-5 in their first open session.
Shrader’s successful kicks came from 33, 37, 41 and 45 yards, while the undrafted rookie Trujillo was good from 33, 37 and 45 yards out.
The pair were both consistent from short range. Long distance was a different story.
Three of their combined four misses came from beyond 50 yards. While it is early in camp and there’s plenty of time to correct, it’s not an encouraging development for a team which has struggled to find a consistent kicker from long range since the retirement of Adam Vinatieri.
Former Colts kickers Rodrigo Blankenship and Matt Gay in particular had their issues from beyond 50 yards. Blankenship was 1-for-4 in his two seasons while Gay was 11-for-22.
Neither kicker being above 50% from that range shows a pattern amongst the kickers who have come through Indianapolis in the last five years: they haven’t been reliable from distance.
If their first appearance of camp is any indication, then that issue will continue to bother the Colts in 2025.
