WASHINGTON, D.C. — Jhoan Duran exited in the ninth inning of the Phillies’ game Friday night against the Washington Nationals after taking a 94.1 mph liner to his right ankle off the bat of Paul DeJong.
Duran, who had run from the mound trying to make a play at first, limped toward the first baseline. He crouched, hands on his knees, staring at his feet, as the Phillies’ training staff rushed to his side. He remained on the field, talking with the Phillies and Nationals trainers along with manager Rob Thomson and the Phillies infielders as David Robertson began to warm in the bullpen. Duran grimaced as he looked toward his ankle and gingerly attempted to put weight on it.
It took around six minutes before Duran departed the field, the Nationals’ bullpen cart taking him to the center field exit.

After departing the field, Duran went to the Nationals’ clubhouse with their team doctor for imaging. The X-rays came back negative, and Duran will be evaluated further on Saturday.
The injury comes after Duran has elevated the Phillies’ bullpen after being acquired in a trade with Minnesota on July 30.

In four appearances before Friday’s game, he’d given up one hit and struck out three while allowing no runs. He became the only closer in Phillies history with three straight one-two-three saves in their first three appearances with the club.
David Robertson entered and recorded the final three outs of a 6-2 Phillies win, but the club and its fans will anxiously wait for more word on the closer’s status.
