BAN vs AFG head to head record
Bangladesh are in a must-win territory. They beat Hong Kong in their tournament opener before being humbled by Sri Lanka. A loss to Afghanistan will certainly end their hopes of qualifying for the Super 4s. Meanwhile, Afghanistan thrashed Hong Kong in their opener and they have not played a game since. A win tonight will help them qualify for the Super 4s along with Sri Lanka. A loss will revive Bangladesh’s hopes but make Afghanistan’s final Group B game against Sri Lanka a virtual knockout.
Bangladesh have won the toss and opted to bat first in a must-win clash against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi today.
Afghanistan Playing XI: Sediqullah Atal, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan(c), Noor Ahmad, AM Ghazanfar, Fazalhaq Farooqi
Bangladesh Playing XI: Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Saif Hassan, Litton Das (wk/c), Towhid Hridoy, Nasum Ahmed, Nurul Hasan, Jaker Ali, Shamim Hossain, Rishad Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed
National anthems are done. Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan are at the crease for Bangladesh. Saif Hassan will take strike. Fazalhaq Farooqi will open the attack for the Afghans. Here we go!
    BAN 24/0 (3)
A watchful start from Bangladesh in the first two overs but Tanzid Hasan has taken off in the third. Four fours in the third over by Fazalhaq Farooqi ad Hasan has given Bangladesh the kickstart they needed in this must-win game.
What an exceptional start from Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan. Bangladesh are going at almost 10 runs an over. They take 19 runs from the final over of the powerplay bowled by Allah Ghazanfar and suddenly, Afghanistan are on the backfoot.
    BAN 59/0 (6)
    BAN 69/1 (8)
A top innings from Tanzid Hasan who is batting on 35 from just 15 balls. His partner Saif Hassan has been bowled by Rashid Khan in the seventh over 30 off 28 balls. But Tanzid will keep going. Litton Da is the new man in and the captain will have a lot of responsibility on his shoulder.
    BAN 87/2 (10.1)
Litton Das is gone! Noor Ahmad strikes with his very first delivery. Bangladesh lose their second wicket. Tanzid Hasan is still going hammer and tongs on the other hand but Das had been slow. Bangladeshi captain departs for 9 from 11 and he takes a review with himself as well.
    BAN 114/3 (14)
Noor Ahmad strikes again and this time he gets the set batter Tanzid Hasan who departs for a brilliant 54. Last five overs, just 39 runs and that has put Bangladesh under a bit of pressure. Six overs now remain in this innings. Bangladesh would want to go beyond 175. They still have wickets in hand.
    BAN 130/4 (17)
Bangladesh have slowed down after the powerplay and they have never been able to up the ante since then. Not the best show of batting so far. Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad finish their spells for Pakistan with a couple of wickets each.
Not a perfect ending for Bangladesh and they will think they have finished under par especially considering the kind of start that they got. Bangladesh were 59 for no loss in the powerplay and then have just added 95 more rruns in the next 14 overs. That is not even seven runs per over. Poor finish. Afghanistan will be really happy with their bowling performance.
    BAN 154/5 (20)
We are back and we have been welcomed with a wicket.
Sediqullah Atal has been given out off Nasum Ahmed on the very first ball of this chase. What a start for Bangladesh.
Taskin steams in and Ibrahim Zadran swings at a slightly loose one outside off, trying to carve that square cut, and oops! Rishad can’t hold on! That’s a sitter, waist-high, right in the gloves, but it slips through, lucky escape for Ibrahim, who scampers off for no run.
Nasum strikes! A ball angling in hits Ibrahim Zadran’s pad in front of leg stump. He reviews, but Hawk-Eye shows it just clips the stump, umpire’s call, he’s out.
    AFG 19/2 (4.5)
Rishad Hossain bowls a flat good-length delivery outside off, and Gurbaz steps across, dabbing it to short third man. Gulbadin comes charging in but his return is wild, sailing well over Rishad. Gurbaz hustles through for a single.
Up it goes, and just clears long-off. Shamim tosses it up, Gurbaz meets it sweetly and hammers it straight down the ground. The fielder looked interested for a moment, but the ball keeps climbing and sails over his head for six.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz is gone! The big hope of Afghanistan now departs as well. Rishad Hossain gets his second wicket of the night and Gurbaz walks back for 35. Afghanistan really being pushed out of this clash here in Abu Dhabi.
    AFG 62/4 (10.2)
Afghanistan need 93 runs in 58 balls
    AFG 97/5 (14)
Afghanistan need 58 runs in 36 balls
Azmatullah Omarzai has brought Afghanistan back into this game. 20 runs from the 14th over and all of them by Omarzai. The game is very much alive, especially till Omarazai is on the crease. Bangladesh would pin their hopes on Mustafizur Rahman to get this wicket.
    AFG 124/6 (17)
Afghanistan need 31 runs in 18 balls
Omarzai is gone after a truly brilliant 16-ball 30 but here comes Rashid Khan and he is hitting the ball well tonight. 14 off the 17th over and the game is still alive. Karim Janat really needs to connect a few here otherwise there will be too much pressure on Rashid. Here comes Nasum Ahmed for the 18th over.
Bangladesh win by eight runs. Afghanistan are all out for 146 and that means Group B is still very much alive.
    BAN 154/5 (20)
    AFG 146 (20)
    Bangladesh won by 8 runs
Nasum Ahmed is the Player of the Match for his four-over spell where he took two wickets and gave away just 11 runs. Brilliant bowling from the left-arm spinner and very good usage of him by captain Litton Das.
Now, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have four points each in this group. Afghanistan have two. While Bangladesh have played their three games, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will play each other in their final Group B outing. Unless Sri Lanka lose very badly, they are trough to the Super 4s. A win for Afghanistan will help them seal a Super 4 spot but a loss means Bangladesh will take their spot. Interesting times ahead.
