Adding two more teams to the conference didn’t stop South Carolina women’s basketball from dominating the SEC and winnings its fourth straight regular-season championship last season.
The Gamecocks were co-champs with Texas after splitting the two regular season matchups, but they ended up beating the Longhorns twice in the postseason – once to win the SEC tournament and again in the NCAA Final Four to advance to the championship game.
Coach Dawn Staley and South Carolina are primed to dominate the conference again with key transfer portal additions and two five-star freshmen. A poll of 10 writers who cover the league for the USA TODAY Sports Network unanimously picked the Gamecocks to win a fifth-straight SEC regular-season championship.
South Carolina has won nine of the last 12 regular-season championships, and it has won a combined 18 SEC titles since Staley was hired in 2008.
A reloaded LSU led by senior guard Flau’jae Johnson was picked to finish second and Texas, which is led by reigning SEC Player of the Year Madison Booker, was picked to finish third. Tennessee was picked to finish fourth for coach Kim Caldwell’s second season after finishing tied for eighth last season.
