Men's Soccer Sustains First Defeat Of Season At Hampden-Sydney – lynchburgsports.com

    Game Recap: Men’s Soccer |
Hampden-Sydney, Va. — The University of Lynchburg men’s soccer battled against ODAC foe Hampden-Sydney, but ultimately fell 2-0 on the road on Wednesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field, snapping the squad’s double-digit unbeaten streak.

The No. 18 Hornets (10-1-2, 4-1-0) held a scoreless stalemate with the Tigers (9-1-2, 3-0-2) through nearly 80 minutes of play, but HSC netted two in rapid succession in the 80th and 81st minutes to secure the victory, breaking Lynchburg’s nine-game winning streak and 12-game undefeated streak. Walker Stebbings tallied the opening goal in the 80th minute off an assist from Zakky Johnston, then doubled the lead moments later with help from Kevin Nova Euceda.

Both teams held firm defensively through the opening 45 minutes. Lynchburg managed five first-half shots and earned a pair of corner kicks, but Hampden-Sydney goalkeeper Stig Larson turned away each of the Hornets’ early chances that landed on frame. Chris Wiley and Isaac Torres each placed shots on target before halftime, while William Casey and Keaton Napior added attempts from distance.

The deadlock continued into the second half as Lynchburg increased its attacking pressure, but the Tigers outshot the Hornets by an 11-8 margin in the final 45 minutes, ending with a 15-13 edge overall. Larson again came up strong in goal for Hampden-Sydney, totaling five saves to keep the Hornets off the board.

Torres and Casey each registered shots on target for Lynchburg in the final ten minutes, but the Tigers’ defense held firm to close out the result. Goalkeeper Thomas Viscuso finished with three saves in 90 minutes of action.

Wiley led the Hornets with three shots and two on goal, followed by Torres and Casey with two attempts each. The Hornets matched Hampden-Sydney in fouls (13) and corner kicks (5-3 edge to Lynchburg), but could not convert their possession into scoring opportunities down the stretch.

The Hornets will look to get back into the win column this weekend when they welcome Eastern Mennonite to Shellenberger Field for Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
