LOOKING FOR A WIN — Weir High will take the field Friday night at East Liverpool looking to get a victory. – Michael D. McElwain
EAST LIVERPOOL — One will often hear coaches say that a young team needs to “learn how to win.”
Weir High had itself in postion to get its first win last week, holding a lead for the first time this season on the road at East Fairmont, but were not able to finish the job in the second half.
This week they’ll look to build on that early success and take the next step when they go on the road again to East Liverpool Friday night.
“I thought we would be able to move the ball on them, which we did,” Weir head coach Quincy Wilson said of last week’s game. “But the second half, we just got out of sync and gave up some big plays.
“It’s encouraging going into this next game, I’ve been saying our guys need to see success. Having been able to get a lead, I think they’ve seen it, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
“Our guys have been working hard since Saturday and are excited for Friday night.”
He hopes they learn from the experience and can put four quarters together to finish the job now.
“We have to learn how to finish and we have to play better in crucial situations,” Wilson said. “It’s the mental discipline in the crucial moments we need to execute in to succeed and we can’t let opportunities pass by when we have them.”
The Potters (2-6) may not have the win total they would have hoped for, but Wilson cautions they are way more talented than their record shows.
“Going back to when I played, they’ve always had great athletes,” Wilson said. “They’re really similar to us. They’ve had a tough year, but they have athletes all across the board. Anybody that’s played them has said you hope this is not the week those athletes bust out and break out.”
Those athletes are led by junior WR Dre’Keim Abercrombie, who has 26 catches for 386 yards and seven touchdowns on the season. Junior QB Ben Myers has thrown for 837 yards and 10 scores while rushing for five more TDs, and senior tailback Amir Baker averages 5.5 yards per carry and has 506 yards on the season.
“They have great size, a six-foot-four receiver on the outside, Abercrombie, and they have good skill guys. Their quarterback is a three-year starter. He can get the ball there. I think they’ve had some issues with snaps and some penalties. So, again, we don’t want this to be the week where they put it together.”
“I love the matchup,” Wilson added. “I think if we can play solid on defense and we can just continue rolling the offense, we’ve got a good chance to go up there and get a win.”
The Potters and Red Riders have faced one common opponent as both have losses to undefeated Indian Creek on their record.
The opening kick at Patterson Field Friday night is set for 7 p.m.
