Pakistan were 107/1 at lunch in Lahore on Day 1, and the second-wicket stand ended up being worth 161 runs. They will be hoping for a similarly dominant, if not better, partnership here in Rawalpindi. The second session is set to resume at 7.40 am GMT, but in the meantime, you can switch tabs and follow the action from the second T20I between New Zealand and England in Christchurch, where the tourists have gotten off to a strong start. Cheers!
Apart from the delivery that spun sharply to dismiss Imam, there haven’t been any demons in the surface despite all the pre-match talk about it being drier and more abrasive than the one in Lahore. With the ball getting softer, if conditions ease out, it could be a long day in the field for South Africa. However, Marco Jansen found a bit of reverse swing before lunch, which will be something to watch out for in the second session.
Simon Harmer produced a ripper to see the back of Imam, but that was as good as it got for the visitors in that session. Shan Masood looked shaky early on against the spinners but soon decided to use his feet to force the spinners off their lengths. That adjustment paid off for the Pakistani skipper. Shafique did ride his luck, having been dropped on 0 and 15, and surviving a close call when the ball grazed the off stump without dislodging the bails on nought. However, he was able to put those moments behind him and grew in confidence as the innings progressed.
A solid session for Pakistan. Having won the toss, they needed to get off to a strong start, and they have done just that. South Africa, on the other hand, will have expected more than a single wicket. Had the chances offered been taken, the visitors might have had a different story to tell. Pakistan got off to a steady start as the opening pair of Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq nearly navigated the first hour unscathed. Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen asked plenty of questions, beating both openers on either edge, but Shafique and Imam managed to capitalise whenever the seamers strayed in line or length.
29.6: Marco Jansen to Abdullah Shafique, Much fuller, pitching it just outside off and shaping it in. Abdullah Shafique lunges and pushes it toward the extra cover fielder. That’s Lunch on Day 1!
29.5: Marco Jansen to Abdullah Shafique, Short of a length, on off, shaping it in. Abdullah Shafique covers the stumps and dabs it toward the leg side.
Tony de Zorzi comes in at short leg.
29.4: Marco Jansen to Abdullah Shafique, Slower one now from Marco Jansen, on a back of a length, around off. Abdullah Shafique opens the face of the willow and steers it toward gully.
29.3: Marco Jansen to Abdullah Shafique, Back of a length, on middle. Abdullah Shafique rides the bounce and dabs it toward the right of the bowler. Pakistan are looking much settled at this point in time!
29.2: Marco Jansen to Abdullah Shafique, Full-length delivery, outside off. Abdullah Shafique prods and defends it toward cover.
29.1: Marco Jansen to Abdullah Shafique, Marco Jansen scoots from around the wicket and bends his back to bowl a bouncer, angling it down the leg. Abdullah Shafique ducks underneath the delivery and makes the leave.
28.6: Keshav Maharaj to Shan Masood, Full-length delivery, outside off. Shan Masood strides out and brings out his formidable defense.
28.5: Keshav Maharaj to Shan Masood, Flighted, fuller on off. Shan Masood lunges and defends it toward the leg side.
28.4: Keshav Maharaj to Shan Masood, Pitches it up, just outside off. Shan Masood blocks it to his front.
28.3: Keshav Maharaj to Shan Masood, Tossed up, outside off. Shan Masood flicks it a bit uppishly toward short mid-wicket.
28.2: Keshav Maharaj to Shan Masood, Flat and much fuller, on middle. Shan Masood jams it back to the bowler.
28.1: Keshav Maharaj to Abdullah Shafique, Pitches it up, down the leg. Abdullah Shafique clips it toward deep square leg for a single.
27.6: Marco Jansen to Shan Masood, Fullish, around off. Shan Masood knocks it toward cover.
27.5: Marco Jansen to Shan Masood, Another low full toss, angling it down the leg. Shan Masood fails to connect with the flick.
27.4: Marco Jansen to Shan Masood, Low full toss, shaping it down the leg. Shan Masood flicks it but misses. Kyle Verreynne, behind the stumps, does well to dive full stretched to his right and gathers it to save the boundary.
