On Sunday, Rohit Sharma was back in action for the first time since he was replaced as India’s captain by Shubman Gill.
As India took on Australia in the first ODI at the Optus Stadium in Perth, Rohit only managed 8 runs off 14 balls in his brief stay with the help of a four on a straight drive.

His innings was cut short by Josh Hazlewood’s well-directed back-of-the-length delivery — Rohit failed to adjust quickly and edged it to Nathan Ellis in the slip.
Following the disappointing 7-wicket loss, fans took to social media and blamed the Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar duo for disrupting the dressing room environment, using an alleged quote from Navjot Singh Sidhu.
A certain section of fans on social media has built a narrative against the head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar for allegedly sidelining the former India captain Rohit from ODI captaincy.
Adding to the narrative, a Twitter (X) user created a fabricated quote creating distress among the fans.

“If India wants to win the 2027 ODI World Cup, then BCCI should remove Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir as soon as possible and hand over the captaincy to Rohit Sharma again with full respect,” wrote the user, implying Sidhu had said it.
Sidhu noticed it and quickly responded to the fake quote in a befitting style, while refuting the claims made by the user using his name.
“Never said it , don’t spread fake news ,never imagined it. Shame on you,” Sidhu posted.
Hours later, Sidhu also retweeted Gambhir’s tweet, in which the coach posted an image with the former batter to wish him a happy birthday.
Next, the second India-Australia ODI will take place in Adelaide on Thursday, October 23, as India tries to level the series.
