BEA 92, SJA 78
After dropping their previous two games, the Blue Earth Area boys basketball team got back on track with a 92-78 triumph over the St. James Area Saints on Dec. 14, in Blue Earth.
BEA’s Gage Barker opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and the Bucs maintained a lead until St. James produced five consecutive points to turn an 8-4 deficit into a 9-8 lead two and a half minutes into the game.
A basket from behind the arc by the Bucs’ Jacob Grandgenett momentarily put BEA back on top 11-9 before the Saints countered with their own 3-pointer to retake the lead at 12-11.
It was the final lead of the night for St. James Area. A 3-pointer by Sully Dahlberg and three straight drives to the hoop for baskets by Barker had BEA out in front 20-16 with 12:37 remaining in the first half.
The Saints kept the game close and were within two points a number of times. However, the tide turned with 4:26 to play before intermission.
With BEA holding a 28-26 advantage, consecutive 3-pointers by Branson Hauskins, Grandgenett and Will Bromeland and a drive by Barker extended the Bucs’ lead to 39-26 with just over two minutes left in the half.
After the Saints nailed a 3-pointer to break the Bucs’ streak, Grandgenett’s pin-point pass to Hauskins capped off a fast break with an easy basket to give BEA a 41-29 lead.
St. James scored to cut BEA’s lead to 10 points but Hauskins’ shot from behind the arc scorched the net with six seconds showing on the clock and ended the scoring for the first half with BEA in the lead 44-31.
