Harry Donahue, a longtime news anchor for KYW Newsradio, passed away from cancer at the age of 77, writes Mike DeNardo for KYW Newsradio.
Donahue, a Philadelphia native born and raised in Olney, started out at KYW Newsradio in 1974 as a freelance reporter.
In 1974, he became an anchor and officially began what was a 35-year run as a Morning Drive and Sports anchor.
From that point, generations of Philadelphians came to recognize Donahue’s voice, as he brought the news, sports, weather, and traffic over the airwaves over the decades.
Donahue was also a staple within the city’s sports radio scene. He did play-by-play for the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL in the 1980s, and was also the TV and radio voice for Temple University’s football and basketball teams for more than two decades.
Donahue retired from Newsradio in 2014. Shortly thereafter, he was inducted into the KYW Newsradio Hall of Fame.
Earlier this year, KYW celebrates its 60th anniversary, to which Donahue spoke on what his long career at the station meant to him.
“Who gets a chance to cover these types of teams, these types of individuals in the city where they grew up,” Donahue said. “That was the special part for me,” he said.
