India have taken a 2-1 lead in the 5-match T20I series against Australia. It was a terrific performance from the Indian bowlers, who staged an outstanding comeback. Axar Patel becomes man of the match.
Washington Sundar has been introduced to the bowling for the first time today as Suryakumar Yadav turns into the right-arm off-spinner for another wicket and get closer towards victory.
Varun Chakaravarthy gets his first wicket of the night and it’s the Big show Glenn Maxwell, who made room for a big shot but couldn’t read the line well as the ball crashed onto the off-stump.
Australia are reeling now in front of the Indian bowling attack which has brought the visitors back into the game after a flurry of wickets in the last few overs. Arshdeep Singh joins the party and gets his first wicket of the night in the form of Josh Philippe. However, job not done yet as Glenn Maxwell walks in.
The dangerman Tim David walks back after a quickfire 14 off 9 and Shivam Dube gets his second of the night. A few more wickets will surely put the Indians in full control. Marcus Stoinis is the new man in. Australia need 73 off 48.
Shivam Dube introduced to the attack and gets a wicket off just the second ball and it’s the Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh, who departs for 30 off 24. India are back into the game with two batters – Tim David and Josh Phillippe in the crease.
Axar Patel gets another wicket as he cleans up Josh Inglis’ stumps. The Australian wicket-keeper batter went down the track, looking for a big shot but missed the line completely.
Abhishek Sharma drops a tough chance to dismiss Mitchell Marsh for 23 runs. Varun Chakaravarthy deceived the Australian skipper, who lofted it high but could not get the distance. Abhishek ran and covered plenty of ground but ended up thwarting the ball as he fell down.
Axar Patel gets the first breakthrough wicket of Matt Short for 25 off 19. The left-arm off-spinner bowled outside off and struck Short’s pads. The on-field Umpire said not-out but he had to change his decision following a successful referral by Team India.
Australia are off to a flyer, thanks to Mitchell Marsh and Matt Short’s blistering start. India continue to look for the first breakthrough wicket.
Right, then. India get into a huddle and gear up to defend their 168-run target. Arshdeep Singh has the ball in hand for the first over, with Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh on strike and Matthew Short alongside him. Marsh is off the mark straightaway, tucking the first ball around the corner for a single. Short is more enterprising, glancing the first delivery he faces fine to the boundary. Six runs off the first over.
AUS: 6/0 (1)
Very good fightback from the hosts, who shifted the entire momentum towards them after the 13th over and they will need 168 runs to gain a 2-1 lead in the series. Nathan Ellis (3/21) was impressive with his slower ball execution, Adam Zampa (3/45) proved a little costly but also took some important wickets. Xavier Bartlett and Marcus Stoinis collected a wicket each.
Terrible outing for middle and lower middle-order batters in the 1st innings of the 4th T20I in Queensland. Nathan Ellis gets his 3rd wicket of the night in the form of Washington Sundar, who walks back after scoring 12 off 7.
The world champions are falling apart quite too easily as Adam Zampa gets Jitesh Sharma with an lbw that was reversed by the 3rd Umpire after it was initially given not-out by the on-field Umpire. India going down badly in the later half of the 1st innings. Two new batters Axar Patel and Washington Sundar will aim for a strong finish and try to score as much as 170.
Extremely good period of play for Australia as they get 3 wickets in three consecutive overs. This time, Adam Zampa gets rid of Tilak Verma, who tried to reverse-sweep but gets his glove on the ball with Josh Inglis completing an easy catch. The Indian camp will be disappointed with the way things have gone from the 13th over onwards.
Skipper Suryakumar Yadav, while trying to club one to the stands, ends up finding Tim David in the leg-side. SKY was looking to release some pressure but he could not time Xavier Bartlett’s delivery to perfection. Jitesh Sharma is out in the middle now.
Shubman Gill has to walk back for 46 runs as Nathan Ellis, who has easily been Australia’s best bowler, castles the stumps with an excellent back of the hand slower delivery. He gets his second big fish of the day. Tilak Verma comes out to bat at number 5.
Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav have taken control and the former just smashed a huge six off Aussie all-rounder Marcus Stoinis in the 14th over. The Indian skipper has also started off strongly, smashing 16 off 6 at a daunting strike rate of over 200.
Nathan Ellis rocks Shivam Dube’s stumps with an exceptional back of a length slower delivery. Dube got tangled up with Ellis successfully targeting the leg-stump and the latter gets his man following a great set-up. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav walks out to bat.
Zampa tosses it up wide of off, perhaps the googly, but it makes no difference to Shivam Dube, who smashed it away for the biggest six of the night so far.
Shivam Dube gets off the mark with a four off Ben Dwarshuis. He will be aiming to make the most out of this opportunity. He came out to bat only once before in the series – 2nd T20I, where he had a score of just 4.
Adam Zampa comes into the attack and gets the first breakthrough wicket of Abhishek Sharma, who tried to clear the boundary ropes but ended up finding Tim David. Interestingly, Shivam Dube, who is known for his aggressive batting against spin, comes out to bat at number 3.
Despite the early seam movement, Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill have been able to score at a run-rate of just over 8. Both of them are batting with an attacking intent with Abhishek sending Adam Zampa for a six off the second ball of the 7th over.
Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill have gotten India off to a decent start in Carrara. The duo are timing the ball perfectly and have been able to manoeuvre the early seam movement very well.
Abhishek Sharma smashes India’s first boundary of the 4th T20I off Xavier Bartlett. He comes down the track and plays it over covers for a four.
Ben Dwarshuis swings it away from Abhishek Sharma to start the proceedings of the 4th T20I at the Heritage Bank Stadium in Carrara. In the 2nd ball, Xavier Bartlett dropped an easy catch of Abhishek (0 off 2), who smashed it up and above, but could not find the distance.
Suryakumar Yadav: “This is what you play bilaterals for, you challenge yourself and it is a beautiful stadium, everything to play for. The preparation has been good. We had a day off, had a good practice session yesterday, looks like a subcontinent wicket, later on it might get slower so we are happy to bat first. We were looking to bat first. Looks similar to Indian conditions, put runs on the board and we want to take up that challenge. We are going with the same team.”
Mitchell Marsh: “We are going to bowl first. We don’t play a lot here. It is great to be here, will try to get as much information about the surface as we can. It is great, five-match series going down to the last two games, both teams will be pumped. We have four changes – Zampa, Maxwell, Philippe and Dwarshuis come in for four other guys.”
India remain unchanged; Australia make 4 changes to their playing XI
India XI: Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Shivam Dube, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah
Australia XI: Mitchell Marsh (C), Matthew Short, Josh Inglis (WK), Tim David, Josh Philippe, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa
News from the centre: Mitchell Marsh has won the toss and asked India to bat first. The Aussies have made 4 changes and the visitors remain unchanged from the 3rd T20I win in Hobart.
“From our side we just keep on asking them to work hard, train hard and be ready for when they do get the opportunity.” – Morkel said on the eve of the 4th T20I.
On Arshdeep Singh: “I think Arshdeep is experienced, he’s taken the most wickets for us in the powerplay, but for us, on the day, it’s also just to have a look at other combinations and he understands that.”
Clear skies for today’s match in Carrara with absolutely no chances of rain. Temperatures will range from a high of 25 degree Celsius to a low of 20 degrees Celsius in the evening.
There haven’t been many Men’s T20 international matches taking place at the Carrara Oval, but the venue has been hosting the Men’s as well as Women’s Big Bash League matches. The Heritage Bank Stadium has hosted only 2 Men’s T20Is – with Australia taking on South Africa and West Indies back in 2018 and 2022. The Aussies had won against the Windies after chasing down a total of 146 and lost to the Proteas in the most recent T20I at the venue. The surface offers an even, hard surface that favours the pacers with good carry and lateral seam movement. Batters may find it difficult to bat early on, especially against the new ball. It will be a good toss to win and choose to bat first for India.
