Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub are Pakistan’s opening pair, and Nandre Burger has the new ball for South Africa. And… he strikes immediately!! Fakhar goes for a three-ball duck. A very good catch by de Kock, and the Pakistani batter – despite being frustrated – walks back to the pavilion. Babar Azam is the new batter, who gets off the mark immediately.
No Babar special in Faisalabad today! A terrific delivery from Burger, and Babar feathers it for a good catch by Ferreira at first slip. Mohammad Rizwan is the new batter, and he opens his account with a boundary towards the on-side.
And… he’s gone too!! What an over this is turning out to be for Burger. Another shorter delivery does the trick, and the bottom edge takes it to the leg stumps. Salman Ali Agha is the new batter.
After a frustrating start, Saim frees his arms to pull a shorter delivery from Bosch over the line for the first boundary in 20 deliveries for Pakistan. He hits another one in the 10th over to close the first Powerplay at 41. However, it has been a decent spell from the Proteas bowlers, with the run rate just over four-an-over.
With just 14 runs coming in the last five overs, the Pakistani batters are really struggling to get going in what looks like a decent batting pitch in Faisalabad. Saim ends the over with a boundary after 25 balls, but the run rate as dropped to almost three-and-half.
Is this where Saim Ayub will finally get going? A wide-ish delivery from Line, and the Pakistani batter charges down the crease to hammer it over long-of for a six. 13 runs off that over, and Pakistan’s run rate crosses the four-an-over mark.
A cracking boundary on the offside and a couple of singles later, Saim crosses a patient and well-taken half-century off 61 balls, which includes five fours and one six. Pakistan also cross the 100-run mark with the innings almost halfway done.
The danger man, Saim Ayub, has to go!! Bosch, who impressed in the first match as well, takes a terrific return catch off a drive from the batter. He goes off celebrating, and Saim can’t quite believe his luck. Hussain Talat is the new batter.
Hussain Talat’s stay at the crease comes to an end, and Pakistan have lost half their batters. It was drifting away from Talat, as a result, he mistimed hit shot and got a thick leading edge that was an easy catch for the bowler. Mohammad Nawaz comes on as the new batter.
With Salman Ali Agha reaching back-to-back fifties in the series, but still batting at a strike rate of just over 60, Mohammad Nawaz has to be the one to take the risks to prevent Pakistan’s innings from stagnating. He catches a lucky break from Burger, with an outside edge beating the wicketkeeper for four runs.
With Nawaz’s six off Fortuin, Pakistan have taken their run rate to almost four-an-half, with 10 overs still remaining. Ideally, the hosts should be targeting a score 230 or more on this stadium, considering the batting depth that the Proteas have. This partnership between Talat and Agha, now worth 48 runs, will be key fo Pakistan.
What a comeback from Bosch! After being hit for a six by Nawaz and a boundary by Agha, the Proteas pacer dismisses the latter. This was a touch filler and angling in. Agha hit and missed, and the ball rattled into the middle and leg stumps. Faheem Ashraf comes on as the new batter, and hits Ferreira for a four to open his account.
Ashraf is gone!! He had decided to accelerate the innings, hitting two cracking sixes off Bosch and Burger. However, the latter has the last laugh, with his shorter delivery being holed out to Pretorius. Shaheen Shah Afridi comes out to bat and gets off the mark immediately.
Shaheen lasts for just two balls, with a legbreak from Peter getting a top-edge from him, making for an easy return catch. Mohammad Wasim comes on as the new batter.
He and Nawaz combine well, with the latter reaching his half-century in style in 56 balls with a maximum of Peter. The Proteas bowler gets his wicket with the penultimate delivery, but Pakistan reach 263/9.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Quinton de Kock are the opening pair for South Africa, with Shaheen Shah Afridi with the new ball for Pakistan. Two runs off the final delivery of the over to start the chase.
Pretorius dropped! Pakistan can’t afford to do this. Naseem Shah the guilty party, with Pretorius’ shot off the toe end of the bat bouncing off his palm and going down. The Proteas batter survives.
South Africa’s openers have kept the pressure on Pakistan’s bowlers, with big overs off Shaheen, Naseem, and now Wasim. The first powerplay comes to an end with the batting side having a run rate of six-and-half. South Africa need 205 runs more from 40 overs.
A massive breakthrough for Pakistan as the dangerous Pretorius departs, just four runs short of yet another half-century. Wasim gets a thick outside edge, and it’s a good diving grab from Rizwan. Tony de Zorzi is the new batter.
It is a really good batting surface in Faisalabad, and South Africa, despite the setback of losing Pretorius, cross the 100-run mark. They are scoring at over run-a-ball, and unless Pakistan break this partnership soon, will make this chase a formality.
The closest the hosts have come is a big LBW shout off de Kock that the umpire waved off, and the veteran batter punishes Ashraf with a huge six to reach his half-century is just 48 balls.
With de Zorzi playing cautiously at the other end, de Kock has continued with the onslaught on the Pakistani bowlers, hitting Faheem for a four and six. Just 134 more runs needed for the Proteas to level the series.
Salman Agha tosses it up wide, de Zorzi shuffles across and sweeps, doesn’t keep it down. Faheem Ashraf charges in from deep mid-wicket, dives forward, and spills it off his wrists. That should’ve been taken. A single for de Zorzi, but this drop could sting.
Full on the pads from Mohammad Wasim, and Quinton de Kock flicks it wide of mid-wicket for two, that’s his 22nd ODI hundred. No fuss, no roar, just a quiet raise of the bat and a handshake with Tony de Zorzi. Fakhar Zaman does well to pull it back near the rope, but the moment belongs to de Kock, pure class, pure composure.
Too little too late for Pakistan, but Faheem gets the wicket of de Zorzi, who departs for 76 off 63. It was a stellar innings from the Proteas batter, and he will be slightly disappointed to throw his wicket away so cheaply. Matthew Breetzke comes on as the new batter.
It was looking like a formality for a long time ever since de Kock and de Zorzi’s partnership took the match away from Pakistan, and Breetzke gets the winning runs with a single to seal the eight-wicket victory for the Proteas.
